Semin scored two goals in the third period to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. It was Semins first two-goal game with Carolina, which signed the Russian forward in July 2012, and then gave him a $35 million, five-year extension last March. His seventh and eighth goals of the season came a day after general manager Jim Rutherford told a local TV station that he was disappointed in Semins production. "Hes one of the best talents in the world, and when he plays hard, hes one of my favourite players to watch," teammate Riley Nash said. "Its a real treat to watch him, especially the way he played tonight." Semin has been criticized for not playing hard at times, but he had eight shots against Florida and finished with a plus-two rating. Semin rarely speaks with the media and declined to talk once again after the victory over the Panthers. The teams were tied at one until Semin took control of a faceoff win by Eric Staal and shot past Tim Thomas at 2:31 of the third. He then scored Carolinas league-leading ninth short-handed goal on a breakaway at 8:57, also on an assist from Staal. The Hurricanes ended a two-game skid and improved to 6-2 in their last eight. The Panthers got a goal from Dmitry Kulikov with 5:39 remaining but Anton Khudobin held on from there, finishing with 37 saves in the win. Florida went 0 for 5 on the power play while falling to 7-29-4 at Carolinas arena. Nash broke a seven-period scoring drought for the Hurricanes at 3:37 of the second. Radek Dvorak speared the puck when it appeared headed out of the offensive zone and fired toward the net. Nash kicked it to his stick and scored past Thomas. Marcel Goc scored his ninth of the season for Florida at 15:05 of the second, tying it at 1. Jonathan Huberdeau and Tomas Kopecky assisted. "Its 1-1 in the third, and we have to get points in those games," Florida coach Peter Horachek said. "We created chances to score that weve got to bear down on." Khudobin improved to 7-2 this season. Thomas had 36 saves for Florida. The Hurricanes put pressure on Thomas midway through the first period, but the veteran turned away eight shots in four minutes after penalties to Huberdeau at 6:22 and Ed Jovanovski at 8:27. Florida continued to be hindered by its punchless power play. The Panthers failed to convert on 10 power-play minutes Saturday and are 0 for 32 on the man advantage since Dec. 28. The Panthers failed to score in the second after Kopecky drew a double-minor on Dvorak. During the man advantage, Tomas Fleischmann fanned on one solid scoring chance and Kulikov hit the left post. The team would likely begin play in 2017, when the $1 billion retractable roof stadium is set to open next to the Georgia Dome to provide a new home for the NFL Falcons. "Our discussions with Major League Soccer continue, but we do not have a final agreement at this time," Kim Shreckengost, the chief administrative officer for Blanks AMB Group, said Tuesday in an email to The Associated Press. "We hope to complete the agreement soon, at which time we will make a formal announcement." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that a new team will be announced April 16. "We are continuing discussions with Arthur Blank to bring a Major League Soccer expansion team to Atlanta," said Dan Courtemanche, a spokesman for MLS. "However, we have not finalized an agreement at this time." The MLS has long coveted the Atlanta market, the largest in the U.S. without a team, as it moves toward its goal of expanding to 24 franchises. The 19-team league has already announced expansion franchises in New York City and Orlando that are scheduled to begin play next season, in addition to a provisional franchise in Miami owned by a group that includes David Beckham. There are no such concerns in Atlanta, where the Falcons new stadium was designed to accommodate an MLS team, providing Blank with additional revenue streams for the elaborate facility. While most MLS teams are moving toward smaller stadiums that are built solely for soccer, the Atlanta franchise would follow the model of teams in Seattle and Vancouver, which play in larger facilities downsized to provide a more intimate setting. For instance, Vancouvers BC Place has a curtain system that blocks off the upper deck, reducing capacity from 54,000 to 21,000. Atlantas new stadium will likely have a similar capability. Atlanta had two franchises in the old North American Soccer League. The Chiefs won the leagues first championship in 1968 but folded after the 1973 season, having spent their final year known as the Apollos. The Chiefs returned to the NASL in 1979 when the Colorado Caribous moved to Atlanta. That incarnation lasted only three seasons, never drawing as many as 8,000 fans a game before folding due to heavy financial losses. Atlanta has a team in a new version of the NASL, a league that ranks below MLS on the U.S. soccer ladder. The Silverbacks play at a 7,500-seat stadium on the outskirts of the city and are apparently not involved in talks on the MLS expansion team.
