A Few Thoughts on The 'Chinese Virus'

At the height of the pandemic, some clowns spread the rumor that the US Army
athletes brought the virus to WuHan last Oct. Then, astonishingly, a speaker for the
Chinese government tweeted it and asked the US for explanantion. If the Chinese
gov. had evidence, why not present it? If they had not why didn't they shut up? Do
they seriously need a scapegoat at this juncture? Before anything jells with regard 
to the true cause of the virus and as the disaster is still unfolding, hasty
finger-pointing only shows how small-minded and insecure a government is. One
cannot fault Mr. Trump's logic, as the Covid-19 appeared on our radar first from
WuHan and China was its most obvious origin, when he fought back and called it
the "Chinese Virus."

Regardless, this put Chinese or even all Asian Americans in an awkward position.
As the recession and layoff come, who would the unemployed blame and where 
would they vent their wrath even without the official condemnation from the
President of the United States?

Churchill might have said that when one's under 25 and not a democrat, he has no
heart; but if he's over 40 and he's not republican, he has no brain. I used to
agree. Today, I suddenly realized that I had been born into a different race than 
Mr. Churchill. What suited him might not befit me.

One favorite passage came to mind and I felt compelled to paraphrase for the
current war against the virus that the world is engaging.

    Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of
    Covid-19 may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until
    all the wealth piled by the past 50 years of greed and plunder shall be
    sunk, and until every cheap piece of Chinese goods enjoyed at the cost of
    the earth shall be paid by the suffering at the hands of the microbe, as something
    similar was said 3,000 years ago, so still it must be said "the judgements
    of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."

Thanks 暖冬 for reading and your comments. It felt a long week. Hope your family are doing well.

After a four-hour run and some liquor, I was stupid to get riled up by some posts but soon lost interest in arguing. All the name-calling, and sidetracking reminded me of faction feuds in the Cultural Revolution. The venom was amazing just because of differences in opinion. But my skin's so think and am untouched :-)

I agree with what you said or quoted in the second and the last paragraphs. Right, it is not time to point fingers, but the origin of this virus may still remain unclear, or will be so forever. Regardless, it is ill-intentioned to call it a Chinese virus. What the term contains is more dangerous than the virus itself.
