Kitkat Saved The Day

It felt sluggish dragging myself out of bed at around
6:40am. I retired early last night and set the alarm at 5:40am
but knew I might not be able to make it. Yesterday's 12.4
mile was a PR since 2016. The muscles felt sore. I needed
more rest. The amount of energy can be mesuared by how
willingly I am to get out of bed.

Anyway, after one kitkat and 12oz water, I started to climb
MP around 7:30am. My legs felt strong till the foot of the
summit. The summitting part felt not as easy as when I first
did it with L on Mar 17. I rewarded myself with another
kitkat and 12oz of water.

Going down the Horse Heaven trail was another test. Again,
in hindsight, last time seemed easier and I had to pay good
attention to not getting hurt. I was thinking of Barefoot Ken
Bob's advice of relaxing and keeping the knee bent. It was
hard to do when the slope was steep where I had to fast
baby-step to descend. When the right mid-foot landed on hard
objects, the pain from PF often weakened the foot and the
ankle rolled sideways risking a sprain. I had to bend the
right knee more to recover. Overall, one trip to the peak
did not leave the soles painful anymore.

The 0.5 mile from the trail head to mission blvd felt the
best despite of the PF. Then I pushed through the last leg,
the 1.7 miles along the road, and finished in good form. 9.1
miles in total. This ended weekend back-to-back runs of my
training. I will switch to one long hill run per weekend from now on.

Recovery surprised me. By 3:00pm, I felt good enough to walk
to buy grocery over 4 miles. Yesterday after the morning run
I felt lack of energy all day long. Could it be the kitkat?
Scott Jurek said runners needed carbs. It might be true in
more ways than one.

暖冬cool夏 回複 悄悄話 About 25 miles of running and walking in two consecutive days. What a feat! The descent of Horse Heaven Trail looked risky and challenging, but you made it.:)
