Don Mclean(唐.馬克林）於1945年10月2日出生於美國紐約。60年代早期Don在紐約州的俱樂部中以灌製唱片開始了他的演藝生涯，大多數時間裏，Don是一名遊吟歌手。1970年他曾寫了一首紀念梵高的音樂獻辭《vincent》。Don的首次亮相專輯TAPESTRY同年出版，但沒能賣出去。藝術家聯合會第二年和他簽約並製作了American Pie的第一個增加版（Mulder注：即Extended Version)，這首歌驚人地登上了英國排行榜第二，美國第一的位置。這首歌的同名專輯也獲得成功。Don也由此被認為是最有天賦和最有商業價值的新生歌手。盡管開頭不錯，Don的演藝生涯在70年代中期卻陷入了困境，好在他是一名具有強烈自我意識的歌手，1980年他憑借一曲Crying重登排行榜。之後，他的再版舊專輯也引起轟動，他個人也因此而進行大規模巡回演出。80年代以後，Don轉向鄉村音樂發展，不過仍處於流行音樂的主流。1991年，他那張已有20周歲的專輯 American Pie出乎意料的重返英國排行榜前20位，這無疑又掀起了人們對他早先作品的興趣。

　　1.《American Pie》堪稱一首史詩式的作品，縱觀全球樂壇，能將一首長達8分34秒的歌曲唱得不僅不讓人生厭，還讓人們津津樂道並傳頌幾十年的現象可謂少之又少，而唐·麥克林和他的《American Pie》就做到了，如果作品裏沒有引人入勝的敘事性、沒有內蘊幽遠的深刻性，很難相信人們真會傻呆呆地將這麽長的時間消耗在一首歌曲裏。
　　《American Pie》是用音樂記錄美國六十年代曆史的一首史詩，沒有春風得意的讚美，也沒有針鋒相對的批判，有的隻是在輕快的民謠節奏中娓娓地道來——那裏麵有整整一個時代美國人所見、所思、所想，以及所經曆的往事，而事實上正是這樣不帶主觀評述的質樸歌聲，最終打動了一代又一代的美國人，甚至是美國以外的人。
　　在《American Pie》裏，你不僅可以通過歌詞聯想到Buddy Holly的《That’ll be the Day》， The Monotones的《The Book of Love》，以及The Byrds的《Eight Miles High》等等這些五六十年代的經典歌曲，你還可以從歌詞中重溫“在路上”的激情與浪漫，赤著腳在體育館跳踢踏舞的愉悅，在“芝加哥七人案”的審判席上唱起源於哥薩克民歌的反戰歌曲《Where Have All The Flowers Gone》的歌手朱蒂?科林斯，還有“小醜”般的Bob Dylan（鮑比·迪倫），“國王” 樣的Elvis Presley（艾爾維斯·普萊斯利），“王後”Connie Francis（康妮·弗朗西絲），更有正熟讀馬克思經典的 John Lennon（約翰·列儂），因聽了《Helter Skelter》而率領信眾犯下殺人血案的Charles Manson（查爾斯·曼森），你同樣可以跟著唐·麥克林的節奏追憶起1970年10月4日死於海洛因中毒的天才白人布魯斯女歌手Janis Joplin（詹妮斯·喬普林）， 1959年2月3日因飛機失事而不幸英年早逝的搖滾歌手Buddy Holly（巴迪·霍利），1969年在“滾石”的演唱會時被保安活活打死的18歲黑人歌迷。
　　最後，唐·麥克林唱道：“And the three men I admire most/The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost/They caught the last train for the coast/The day the music died/And they were singing” （我最欽仰的三人——聖父、聖子和聖靈，他們都搭乘末班車奔向了海岸，與他們一起，音樂隨之而死，和著他們曾經唱過的……”，這也可以看作是他創作這首作品一個不可忽視的題旨，一種垮掉的信仰，一種無以自撥的絕望，這也正是當時美國一代青年的共性特征，就這樣，一首歌很容易就打動了一代人。

　　作者不禁回憶起美好的往昔。以及都是50年代的經典曲目。跳慢舞，在當時是一次浪漫約會的重要部分，也代表了Don對當年幸福的理解。那個年代，搖滾樂時常被宗教領袖們抨擊為不敬神的(ungodly)。Don在引用歌名的同時，也有意識地為搖滾樂表達了些許的委屈、憤懣。

　　與慢舞一樣，高中裏的Sock Hop也是那個純真年代的一個代表性的活動。Sock Hop通常在學校的體育館中舉行，學生們男女配對，翩翩起舞。之所以叫Sock Hop，是由於出於保護地板的考慮，學生們會脫下鞋，穿著襪子舞蹈。詩句中的“你”，我相信是Don青澀年華時的夢中情人。10年後，那個她在此處，以及在歌曲的一些別的地方被蜻蜓點水般地提及。
　　R&B音樂對搖滾樂的發展施加了決定性的影響，Don在此處以歡快的高音唱出詞句，顯然是對當年R&B的衷心讚美。
