“Shades of Life“ is the first track on the album. And Jonathan E. Blake knows those shades all too well. He dedicated the song “My Dear Friend“ to a friend of his. She died when she was only 37 years old. It’s experiences like these that make Jonathan E. Blake thoughtful and melancholic. He says: “For all my life I’ve been an old soul. I’ve always been ahead of my age: more reflective, thoughtful, melancholic and rich in life experience“. With this album he seeks to combine his musical roots with all the highs and lows of his life, expressed through an orchestral instrumentation and electronic elements like in modern movie scores. Hans Zimmer has therefor always been a huge source of inspiration.
A celebration of life’s highs is the song “The Awakening of Spring“. In its joyfulness you can feel the sun warm you and hear the twittering birds. Because no matter how many lows there were and are yet to come, never forget to enjoy life’s highs.
And even if you’re not one of those old souls you can let the title track “Old Souls“ soothe you. It softly carries you away into the realm of thoughtfulness. You can feel yourself sinking into it while listening. And then there’s that twinkling harmony that feels like asking you, if there’s anything to regret. But never forget to hope and have faith in life’s mystic ways. In the end everything is going to be fine.
