故事發生在上世紀二、三十年代。山清水秀的江南，孕育了民族瑰寶–刺繡。
古鎮方橋繡莊林立，恰似姹紫嫣紅的偌大花圃。而明德繡莊更是一枝獨秀的奇葩，聞名遐邇，因為它擁有獨門絕技緙針鄉和一位技藝超群的繡娘。緙針鄉絕無僅有的 傳人阿秀，靚麗、靈秀、身世迷離，其人其技深藏繡閣，密不示人。
可是，一個意想不到的緣由，莊主明姑不得不讓一位青年學子、繪畫才俊林吾建進入神秘繡房，與阿秀合作價值驚人的刺繡珍品。少女懷春，少男繾情，阿秀與吾建 朝夕相處，互生愛意。然而，愛情之花未及綻放，便罹致殺生之禍。死裏逃生的一對癡男怨女從此天各一方，都誤以為彼此陰陽相隔，隻落得心靈守望。流年似水， 期間多少愛恨情仇，此消彼長，攪人肝腸。
8年後，兩人故地重遊，景物各異，人事皆非。而阿秀的身世揭密，更是石破天驚，不由人萬千感慨。刺繡事業又將兩人命運相連。麵對小吏、豪強、地痞、奸商對 緙針繡的爭奪，他們又開始了一段不平常的人生……
