A little Girl

Sitting on a grassy grave, beneath one of the windows of the church, was a little girl. With her head bent back she was gazing up at the sky and singing, while one of her little hands was pointing to a tiny cloud that hovered like a golden feather above her head. The sun, which had suddenly become very bright, shining on her glossy hair, gave it a metallic luster, and it was difficult to say what was the color, dark bronze or black. So completely absorbed was she in watching the cloud to which her strange song or incantation seemed addressed, that she did not observe me when I rose and went towards her.Over her head, high up in the blue, a lark that was soaring towards' the same gauzy cloud was singing, as if in rivalry. As I slowly approached the child, I could see by her forehead, which, in the sunshine seemed like a globe of pearl, and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely. Her eyes, which at one moment seemed blue-gray, at another violet, were shaded by long black lashes, curving backward in a most peculiar way, and these matched in hue her eyebrows, and the tresses that were tossed about her tender throat and were quivering in the sunlight. All this I did not take in at once; for at first I could see nothing but those quivering, glittering, changeful eyes turned up into my face. Gradually the other features, especially the sensitive full-lipped mouth, grew upon me as I stood silently gazing. Here seemed to me a more perfect beauty than had ever come to me in my loveliest dreams of beauty. Yet it was not her beauty so much as the look she gave me that fascinated me, melted me.

(1)Sitting on a grassy grave…Was a little girl: A little girl was sitting on a grassy grave....

(2)with her head bent back: with+名詞或代詞賓格十分詞(或形容詞,介詞短語等)作狀語,表示伴隨情況。

(3)So completely absorbed was she…that...: 這是一個so…that… address…to:對……

(4)in rivalry(with):與……

(5)at another violet:=at another moment(seemed) violet:一會兒又象是紫羅蘭色的.

⑥take in:接受,領會。

(7) Yet it was not her beauty so much as the look...that fascinated me, melted me:not so much...as作"與其說…… It was…that…

newton123:

The little girl

Below a window of the Church was a grave yard fully covered with green medows, on which was sitting a little girl.

EnLearner:

A grave yard was below a window ..... ( a little girl is contained in a which clause)

A little girl was sitting....

newton123:

She looked up at the sky while singing with one of her little hand pointing to a feather-like colorful cloud floating above her head.

EnLearner:

Should "one of her little hand" be "one of her little hands"

newton123:

The sunlight suddenly became extremely shining, shedding on her lustering hair, reflecting, hard to say what color it was, puce or black.

EnLearner:

hard to say what color it was, puce or black

"hard to say what ..."

newton123:

She was looking up at the colorful cloud with rapture, so her monderful song or mutter seemed exlusively for it.

She did not aware that I was standing up and walking toward her.

EnLearner:

She did was not aware that.....

"Aware" is not a verb.

newton123:

In the high blue sky above her was a lark with opening wings flying toward the colorful cloud, singing that looked competing with her.

EnLearner:

A Lark was flying toward... singing (that looked competing with her)

"that looked competing with her"  這個 that 從句修飾什麽呢?
原句裏用 "singing as if in rivalry" 就很棒。

newton123:

I gently walked to the girl of smooth forehead and complexion so gorgeous under sunlight.

EnLearner:

1.the girl of with a smooth forehead and ...?

2. "so gorgeous under sunlight"

As I slowly approached the child, I could see by her forehead, which, in the sunshine seemed like a globe of pearl, and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely.

I coud see that she was uncommonly lovely.

As I slowly approached the child,  I coud see that she was uncommonly lovely.

As I slowly approached the child, I coud see by her forehead and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely.

As I slowly approached the child, I could see by her forehead, which, in the sunshine seemed like a globe of pearl, and especially by her complexion, that she was uncommonly lovely.

newton123:

Her long black eyelashes bending backward set off eyes with alternating blue and violet color.

EnLearner:

"Her eyelashes set off eyes" - It appears that "set off" was incorrectly used here.

set off
1.
a. To give rise to; cause to occur: set off a chemical reaction.
b. To cause to explode: set off a bomb.
c. To make suddenly or demonstrably angry: The clerk's indifference finally set me off.
2. To indicate as being different; distinguish: features setting him off from the crowd.
3. To direct attention to by contrast; accentuate: set off a passage with italics.
4. To counterbalance, counteract, or compensate for: Our dismay at her leaving was set off by our knowing that she was happy.
5. To start on a journey: set off for Europe.

newton123:

Her long eyelashes and eyebrows and hair with sleek luster, like threads behind her delicate neck, were fluttering gently in the sunlight.

EnLearner:

Her long eyelashes and eyebrow and hair...were fluttering gently in the sunlight.

Her eyes, which at one moment seemed blue-gray, at another violet, were shaded by long black lashes, curving backward in a most peculiar way, and these matched in hue her eyebrows, and the tresses that were tossed about her tender throat and were quivering in the sunlight.

The grave under a window of the church was covered with green grass, and there sat a little girl. She was lifting her head, looking at the sky, and singing a song. Her little fingers were pointing at a wisp of cloud that resembled a golden feather. Suddenly, the sunlight appeared especially bright, shining on her gleaming hairs and coating them with the color of metals, it was hard to tell the color, either dark brown or black. She was looking at the colorful cloud with an intense concentration. Her amazing tunes, or her muttering, seemed to be sent to that colorful cloud. So she did not see me standing up and walking to her. In the blue sky high above her, a skylark, flying with its open wings towards the light and lucent colorful cloud, was singing too, appearing to compete with her. I walked slowly to the little girl, and her forehead as smooth as a pearl under the sun, and her skin tune especially, appeared so lovely before me. Her long black eyelashes curled backward, covering a pair of eyes, which sometimes were blue but other times were violet. Her long eyelashes matched in color with her eyebrows and hairs, and hairs on her soft neck flew gently in the sunlight. I did not take all of these in at once, for I only noticed her sparkling, expressive, and gazing eyes first. I stood there and watched her in silence, and gradually saw the rest of her face, especially her cute and full little mouth. The pretty image before me seemed to be more beautiful than that appeared in my most beautiful dream. But it was her gaze rather than her beauty that fascinated and captivated me.

The color of her eye lashes and eyebow match well with that of her hair.  A lock of her hair covering her tender neck, is floating gently under the sunshine.  I do not notice every thing for at the beginging I pay attention only to her eyes that are shining and full of expressions, stairing at me.  While I am standing close to her and stairing at her silently, I gradually have a clear picture of her other parts, especially that sensitive and well developped little mouth.  The pretty image that appears in front of me is more beautiful than anything that has come into the most beautiful scene in my dreams.   However, I would say I am fantasited and toxicated by the expression in her eyes stairing at me rather than by her beauty.

I strolled to the little girl, whose forehead bathed in the sunlight, round and full like a pearl, and whose skin, in particular, looked extraordinarily adorable to me. Her jet-black long eyelashes, curled up delicately, surrounded her eyes which looked bluish grey in one moment and violet in another. Her eyelashes blended in with her eyebrow and hair, which covered her tender neck, waving in the sun.  I didn’t take in all these right away, as my full attention was given to her sparkling and expressive eyes that were staring at me. I stood there and watched her for a while before I saw the other parts of her face, esp. her little 靈敏??(覺得是中文誤譯。
