美麗的蒙特利爾 [Impression of Montreal]

I like the architectural styles of the Old Montreal. Richly detailed arched window heads, French Balconies, well proportioned trim lines through the elevations, details and details. The greenish colour always makes the buildings look new and fresh even though they probably have been there for hundreds of years.

The Gothic architectural style is probably the most complicated building style that ever exists in human history. Notre-Dame Basilica is an example. A beauty of architecture. Mont Royal Parc is another place worthy to see in Montreal. If you are not religious and just want to see the city, and if you can only pick up one place, I would recommend Mont Royal Parc. The statue area gives you the feeling of freedom, braveness, and self-esteem. It is the only park that I have ever been that gave me these feelings.

Sometimes we hear people say that Quebec people consider they are different from people from other parts of the country and they never stop fighting for independency. I am not fascinated on politics and not interested in the political movements anymore. But I realize that actually the Quebequoises are quite liberal, otherwise McGill University and Concordia University would not be able to survive to this day, considering their official language has to be English and even McGill University is right in the heart of the city.

Montreal is headquarters of many research and design organizations. It is also a centre of arts, visual and performing. My favourite singer Celine Dion is from Montreal.

Travelling makes us think or look at things in a different way. Standing in front of the Olympic Stadium that hosted 1976 summer games, I asked myself, did I ever think of designing a structure like that when I was a design engineer in my earlier career? The answer is no but it helped me to realize that, time by time, we need shift our mindset and adopt new thoughts or ideas, and that should be the way we grow when we reach ages. And among many approaches, travel may be the one that is more achievable and affordable to most of us.
