A few thoughts on chiropractic

(2005-07-10 15:10:26) 下一個

Recently, I read some stories about chiropractic, the profession and its history. Compared to medicine, chiropractic is a relatively new vocasion, with a humble beginning in the early 1900s. In fact, as a profession, chiropractic was initially very poorly received by authorities and medical fraternities (out of jealousy or ignorance?). The early chiropractic practioners were frequently persecuted for practicing medicine without licence, and sentenced to prison, which could be only bailed out by paying heavy penalty. However, instead of paying the monetary penalty and gettign out quietly, many chiropractic practioners chose to fight and serve gaol sentence. This helped to draw people's attention and sympathy. With the benefits of chiropractic becoming increasingly evident, the chiropractic as a profession could not be denied for ever. Now, professional schools of chiropractic have been established both in USA and other countries, and chirapratic is viewed and respected as a branch of medicine that helps relieve pain and sufferring from people with back injury.

The morale from these stories is that people are not willing to accept new ideas, admit their ignorance or change their biased opinions easily, especially these new ideas may threaten their livelihood or bring some possible harm to their established comfort. In addition, many people are just too inert to brace the new develoment without seeing its benefits first hand.
