The Canadian dollar will remain strong - above 90 cents U. S. - for quite a while because the sources of our relative strength will remain in place for at least the next few years.
Our dollar increases in value when more foreign money comes into the country than flows out.
Second, some folks to whom we sell, China and other developing nations, have big pots of investible cash, much of it in U. S. dollars that are currently "wasting assets" - funds that will lose value as U. S. inflation increases.
Another strategy that is open to Canada now that we are in possession of more U. S. dollars than we "need" is to buy up U. S. assets - companies, equities, raw materials - including assets that are outside the U. S. border, for example, here in Canada.
