Two of the most famous names in the violin world — Stradivarius and Leopold Auer — will fold into the hands of Hungarian-born violinist and composer Edvin Marton. He is playing a 1699 Stradivarius violin known as the “ex-Leopold Auer”

The violin got its name because its most famous owner was Auer, a legendary Hungarian violinist and pedagogue who founded what is now considered the Russian violin school. Auer taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1868 to 1917; his students included Jascha Heifetz, Mischa Elman and Nathan Milstein.

However, Auer was equally famous as the violinist who refused to play the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, which would have been with this violin. He later did play the work after the composer altered some passages. Auer owned the violin from 1875 to 1895.

The present owner is a private investor in Germany. Earlier this year, Violin Assets of Germany sifted through more than 200 applications and awarded Marton the rights to perform on the violin for a minimum of 10 years. “A violin has to be played,” explains Marton, whose training included a stint at The Juilliard School. “Otherwise its unique sound will go away.”

Edvin Marton (born Lajos Edvin Cs?ry, February 17, 1974, Vylok, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian-born Hungarian composer and violinist. He became known as the violinist of the skaters, mainly because Evgeni Plushenko, Stéphane Lambiel, Yuzuru Hanyu (as a tribute to Plushenko), and other famous skaters often skated to his music.

Edvin has performed with almost all the main Hungarian orchestras, and given concerts in Austria, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

He has sold over 5 million albums worldwide and played over 1,000 concerts in such iconic venues as Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Vienna Concert Hall or the Shanghai International Festival.

He was always more interested in playing his own music, and this doesn't mean that he wouldn't play Mozart or Vivaldi, it's just that today it is more exciting to perform these works with electronic sounds, since we live in the 21st century.

One of the major highlights of Edvin’s musical career was composing and performing at the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic games center-ice for Gold Medalist Evgeni Plushenko. Edvin has won a Gold Medal at the prestigious International Violin Competition in Canada, an MTV Music Award and the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008.
