The story is compelling, but the writing is so juvenile.
Hugely disappointed. I can't get over how terrible the writing is. So cheesy and predictable.
After trudging through 5 chapters, I gave up. Pulitzer finalist or not, I couldn't go on. Maybe it's the author's dispassionate tone, I find the characters unlovable, I couldn't invest in their story, I could care less! The writing is tedious and boring. The plot sooooo slow-moving. I DID NOT enjoy the first five chapters AT ALL.
no no no no no. I had to keep flipping to the cover just to make sure it's really written by Liane Moriarty. What happened? This book is a total mess. 真的太太太失望了!
I confess, I didn't finish. It's so painfully SLOW going, I just couldn't go on. Also, I'm just not fond of magical realism.
Brutal, dark, depressing, hopeless.
Vuong's language is too florid, too poetic, too embellished through and through. 99% of the sentences are fragmented. It's more of a marathon autobiography poem than a novel.
I didn't enjoy this book. It's got minimal plot. There's too much violence, addiction, mental illness involved and even romanticized.
And nothing to take away.
Hugely disappointed. The first 1/3 is so moving and honest, and then it all became tedious, flat, and repetitive. Worst of all, she came across ungrateful and self-centered. I feel so bad for her adoptive parents.
還要加上My Brilliant Friend. 單獨開了一篇來寫。
