about driving!

I was scared at driving during icy day cos I am a new driver. Next month I have to be on business in another city, the colleage told me that the traffice is clear in that city and it is easier to drive on highway than local cos of the snow. Now I am not driving on high way, should I practice here before I am going to there? here the traffice is bad. Thanks a lot for any input.
