More scholarships awarded by NTU this year

SINGAPORE - The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has seen a 42 per cent increase in the number of university scholarships awarded this year, compared to two years ago.

According to the university, "this is a reflection of the higher quality of students enrolling at NTU".

There has also been a 60 per cent jump in the number of top A-Level students enrolling at NTU this year compared to two years ago, said the school in a media statement. This year, NTU also enrolled its first cohort of medical students at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

The university welcomed a new cohort of scholars and scholarship recipients at the 2013 Scholars Award Ceremony held today.

In all, 271 outstanding students were selected out of thousands of applicants, to receive NTU’s top scholarship, the Nanyang Scholarship and/or be accepted into NTU’s three premier scholars’ programmes - Renaissance Engineering Programme, C N Yang Scholars Programme and University Scholars Programme.

Students enrolled in the three scholars programmes can look forward to attending special seminars led by eminent professors and Nobel laureates as well as workshops by accomplished speakers from various fields.

A hallmark of these premier programmes is guaranteed overseas exchange opportunities at top universities, such as the University of California, Berkeley.

Of the 364 University Scholarships awarded this year, 195 students were awarded the Nanyang Scholarship, while 169 received the College-level Scholarship. NTU’s three premier scholars programme took in a total of 147 top students this year.

This year, the University will have a 42 per cent increase in the number of university scholarships awarded compared to 2011. This is a reflection of the higher quality of students enrolling at NTU. Overall, the quality of students enrolling at NTU has gone up significantly since the University unveiled unique programmes such as the Renaissance Engineering Programme in 2011 and the University Scholars’ Programme in 2012. This year, NTU also enrolled its first cohort of medical students at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. This has led to a 60 per cent jump in the number of top A-Level students enrolling at NTU this year compared to two years ago. A big draw is also NTU’s double-degree programme in Accountancy and Business offered by Nanyang Business School which attracts the brightest minds each year. “Clearly more top A-Level students are choosing NTU, drawn by our impressive offerings including our premier scholars’ programmes such as the Renaissance Engineering Programme, innovative double degrees, our new medical programme, attachments in top overseas universities, and comprehensive scholarships,” said NTU President Professor Bertil Andersson. “We have also been relentless in engaging with aspiring university students. NTU’s premier scholars programmes a draw Among the NTU scholars is Mr Ong Qin Hui, 21, who chose NTU over the offers from five renowned universities including Imperial College London, University College London and King's College London. “Although I had offers from several overseas universities, I chose NTU which offered me the opportunity to take up two top scholars programme. The University Scholars Programme allows me to gain industrial and professional experience through internships or attachments with NTU's eminent global partners, while the CN Yang Scholars Programme promises a challenging and innovative Science and Engineering curriculum. Furthermore, I am able to receive a world-class education right here in Singapore,” said the River Valley High School graduate who will be reading Bioengineering with a minor in Business. Ms Zhao Xin Ting, 19, chose to enrol in NTU’s signature Renaissance Engineering Programme despite receiving offers from renowned universities such as University of Manchester and University of Edinburgh. The Hwa Chong Institution graduate was attracted to the holistic education offered by the Renaissance Engineering Programme, which is NTU’s top engineering programme. “NTU’s Renaissance Engineering Programme is the course that I have been looking for. It gives me necessary technical and professional skills through the engineering education, as well as business related knowledge to handle management level tasks in the future. Also, my parents are extremely supportive of me enrolling into NTU, which is one of the fastest raising universities in the world,” said Xin Ting. She will graduate from the four-and-a-half year Renaissance Engineering Programme with a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Technology Management. Renaissance Engineering Programme students also spend their third year in University of California, Berkeley and take up internship in Silicon Valley. Raffles Institution graduate Ms Soh Ming Li, 19, is looking forward to an enriching academic journey at NTU as a University Scholar Programme scholar. She turned down offers from other universities and chose to enrol in the inaugural intake of NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs degree programme. “The numerous benefits, such as a generous allowance, priority for overseas exchange as well as travel and accommodation grants, offered under the Nanyang Scholarship were a great incentive because they significant eased the financial burden that my family will have to shoulder. I was also very intrigued by the core and elective modules offered under the University Scholars Programme.
