Get ahead vs. get along, get by

Home/School return at a professor X-mas party, what a spiritual lift but not a positional one :)
Mr. T's evaluation for reading part of my script is: "get along", not get ahead 出人頭地, which is better. In fact my writing is barely can be called as get by or get nowhere.
