Book: A Comrade Lost and Found by Jan Wong

(2014-04-25 22:20:05) 下一個
Jan, a Canadian Chinese driven by her romantized passion for Chinese communism, spent a few of her emerging adult years at Beijing University during the Cultural Revolution. She was the sent-down youth, factory worker, a Chinese language learner and as brain-washed as all else then. Without any external pressure, she reported a fellow Beida student to the university authority because the girl expressed the desire to go abroad. As everyone can imagine of the turbulent years, the girl got expelled and Jan believed she was the cause of it only many years later when she went through her diary entries and remembered the incident.

To come to terms with herself, Jan brought her family of two teen boys and a white husband, who also went through Cultural Revolution, back to Beijing, where she had also worked as a foreign journalist for many years, to search for the girl and find out what had happended... From then on the author's journalistic talents and captivating writing revealed the Chinese society then and now, the ups and downs of the people that rode the tides of history... Another worthy read!
