這出同名音樂劇是根據雨果的描寫大革命前夕的法國的巨著“悲慘世界” （Les Miserables）改編的。在上世紀80及90年代對音樂劇產生了巨大影響。是那個時期音樂劇的傑出代表。作曲家, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg's 的音樂主題雖然有些重複，但那優美的旋律，激動人心的歌曲總能深刻感染並觸摸到觀眾的心靈。

On My Own 背景： “On My Own” 是音樂劇“悲慘世界”中悲劇性人物愛潘妮（Eponine）的一個代表性唱段，是劇中最受歡迎的曲目之一，愛潘妮也是一個非常令人同情和喜愛的劇中角色。愛潘妮是小旅店老板的女兒，她一直執著地深愛著學生馬呂斯（Marius），但是馬呂斯隻把她當作朋友，馬呂斯愛的是珂賽特（Cosette）。一天，愛潘妮在幫馬呂斯送一封給珂賽特的信後，獨自走在街頭，感到非常孤獨悲傷，她幻想著馬呂斯就在自己身邊，於是唱起了這首歌。
