Norma \'Casta Diva\'by Maria Callas and Sutherland

Casta Diva來自歌劇Norma，它是19世紀初意大利劇作家Bellini的作品。講的是古羅馬帝國時期，女祭司Norma違背神論愛上了不該愛的人，可惜她的癡心換來對方的薄意，他竟然愛上另外一個更年輕的女祭司。Casta Diva表現的就是Norma對女神的虔誠和她的心聲：聖潔的女神啊，請賜於我們和平；親愛的人啊，請回到我的身邊。

Bellini是一個天才劇作家，26歲就在拿波裏（Napoli）歌劇院上演自己的作品，並一舉成名。此後幾年他寫下包括《諾瑪》、《夢遊女》在內的幾部傳世之作。後來他因為感情受挫，決意離開意大利進軍巴黎。他在另一位著名劇作家Rossini的指導下，以《清教徒》一劇征服了口味挑剔的巴黎觀眾。可惜他等不到第99部作品才封筆，寫完《清教徒》之後一年，年僅34歲的他就因為痢疾英年早逝。上帝隻讓他留9部作品給世人。這位薄命如莫紮特的天才雖然作品很少，但往後影響著另外兩位歌劇大師威爾第（Verdi）和瓦格納（Wagner），甚至肖邦和李斯特。

說到Norma，不得不說兩位世界著名的女高音，一個是Maria Callas的，一個是Joan Sutherland的。Callas被譽為歌劇女神。她17歲就出演Puccini的名劇《托斯卡》。當時的美聲唱法泛濫，歌手隨意賣弄技巧，而Callas就將聲音和舞台表演融合在一起，聲音被賦予色澤，令人耳目一新。她的舞台表現力在歌劇發展史上是革命性的。她塑造的蝴蝶夫人、茶花女、諾瑪（Norma）、費德裏奧（Fidelio）等角色都一一成為經典，後來的女高音均難以逾越。Callas在美國大都會演出Norma，標誌著她藝術上的高峰。 

“Everyone has his time.” 歌唱藝術家和運動員一樣，都有一個事業的黃金時期，過了這個時期事業就可能會急速下滑，很快的從觀眾的視線裏淡出。Callas在1958年羅馬歌劇院演出Norma的失誤，使她開始步入事業的低潮。這個時候她結識了希臘船王Onassis，兩者感情發展迅速。不過對一個女高音來說，投到一個商賈巨富的懷抱不知是福是禍？在夜夜笙歌的社交生活中，她很少再去登台演出。1965年她在巴黎重演Norma時，竟被一初出茅廬的女高音搶過風頭，這對她的打擊非常致命。沒有了“歌劇女神”光環的她開始失寵，1968年，船王Onassis拋棄了Callas與肯尼迪的遺孀傑奎琳結婚，轟動整個世界。而那邊廂的Callas就傷心欲絕，幾乎要自殺。

還有一事值得一提，Callas雖然出生於美國，但是雙親都是希臘移民，所以她把自己當作希臘人。這就是為什麽在2004雅典奧運會上我們會聽到她的聲音。其實當時Callas已經逝世多年，奧運隻是通過科技將她的歌聲重現。1977年，在船王逝世一年之後，這位一代歌劇皇後也鬱鬱地離開了人世。

她的衣缽算是傳給了Joan Sutherland。這兩位女高音之間的故事也是與Norma有關。

Sutherland 1926年出生於澳大利亞，1952年就和Callas同台演出了Norma，她演的女友Clotilde。在演出Norma期間，Sutherland誠惶誠恐的向Callas求教，而Callas就鼓勵她向花腔女高音發展。Sutherland的聲音沒有Callas的潑辣和野性，卻也清亮剔透和淳厚，這可能跟她年輕時在悉尼音樂學院學女中音有關。她的聲域很寬，能飄得很高，又能壓到很低。1963年，她代替事業日漸式微的Callas出演Norma，從此接過了Callas“女高音王後”的頭銜。Sutherland也一發不可收拾，在一次演出Lucia Di Lammermoor (《拉美莫爾的露契亞》)時觀眾竟然謝幕達三十多次！她從此也成為花腔女高音的典範，意大利唱法（Bel Canto）傳統也因她發揚光大。1990年她在悉尼歌劇院完美謝幕，正式退出歌劇舞台。
