i didn't get this music video at first. i loved the music but thought the visualization was completely irrelevant.
it turned out, based on the comments around internet, the song was about desperation with unobtainable love. hence he removed all his wordly belongings - including his stinky sneakers - before he jumped off the bank.
(the meaning was actually obvious if you pay attention to the lyrics.)
