What can I tell you? I was totally totally totally blown away by the performance. Awe-struck. Fulfilled beyond my wildest imagination.
It was absolutely fantastic.
The show is a dance musical with music from Billy Joel’s songs. It’s a story about 5 young people living in the 60s. The show’s currently going into its final stage of performance and is scheduled to be closed on 12/11. (What a shame!)
To be honest, I didn’t have much an expectation going in. I remember, before the show began, talking to the woman sitting to my left about what she knew of the show. She said she liked ballet and opera so she thought this show would be perfect for her. How right she was.
First up, the staging of the show is quite unusual:
The stage is split vertically into two sections. The lead vocal and the band are located on the upper platform a little bit to the back. The dancers perform underneath.
The dance is a hybrid between ballet and modern dance. There was no narration or dialogue. The story was told, extremely beautifully, through the harmony of music and dance.
The lead singer’s singing was explosive. Powerful and deeply moving.
The dancing was superb. The main dancers’ unique styles shone through the characters they played.
And at the end of day, NOTHING beats a (good) live performance and the live audience. The audience was very involved right from the beginning and they just went WILD at the end. There were screamers, whistlers and heavy clappers. The ever-so-elegant woman sitting to my left turned out to be a “professional” whistler – she whistled long and hard, making piercing sound to the point that I thought I was getting deaf! : )
(And having the best possible seat certainly doesn’t hurt my immensely enjoying this show. J)
