From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zorro (originally called Señor Zorro) is a fictional character who has been featured in American books, stories, films, and television series since 1919.

Zorro (Spanish for Fox) is the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega (originally Don Diego Vega), a fictional nobleman and master swordsman living in Spanish and Mexican-era California. He defends the people of the land against tyrannical governors and other villains; not only is he much too cunning and foxlike for the bumbling authorities to catch, but he delights in publicly humiliating those same foes while riding on his horse Toronado.

Zorro (often called "El Zorro" in early stories) was created in 1919 by pulp writer Johnston McCulley, and first made his appearance in The Curse of Capistrano, serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Weekly. The character's visual motif is, typically, a black costume with a flowing Spanish cape, a flat-brimmed Andalusian-style hat, more appropriate to a California caballero than the wide sombrero the character wore in the original, and a black cowl mask that covers the top of the head from eye level upwards. (The mask covered his whole face in the original.) In addition, his favored weapon is a rapier which he often uses to leave his distinctive mark, a large 'Z' made with three quick cuts. He also uses a bullwhip, like the later Indiana Jones. In the original story, he used a pistol, but this has rarely been seen since.

In the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro, a younger protagonist, Alejandro Murrieta becomes Diego's successor, and returns in the 2005 sequel The Legend of Zorro. (In this second appearance, he is called Don Alejandro de la Vega.) Zorro's latest appearance (as Diego) is in the Telemundo series Zorro: La Espada y La Rosa.

Short Biography

Born on 8 November 1935 in Sceaux, France, Alain Delon saw his parents, Edith and Fabien, separate when he was 4. He was then entrusted to the care of a host family, the Néreau's, in Fresnes, before being sent to a Catholic boarding school. At 17, he joined the Navy and set off for Indochina. In 1956, back in France, he did several "odd jobs" before, in 1957, being spotted by Yves Allégret, who offered him a role in "Quand la femme s'en mêle".

This was the start of a long career of 82 films, shot with the greatest directors, from Antonioni to Melville, and including Visconti, Clément, Verneuil, Malle, Losey, to mention but a few. Between 1962 and 1963 three films in which he starred won the highest awards: "L'Eclipse" by Antonioni carried off the Prix Spécial du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival; the following year, "Le Guépard" by Visconti won the Palme d'Or from that same festival; finally, "Mélodie en sous-sol", directed by Verneuil, was awarded, in the United States, the "Golden Globe" for the best foreign language film. After trying his hand at producing for the first time in 1964 with "L'insoumis", from 1968 Alain Delon was intensively involved in this work, producing 26 films until 1990.

In 1978 he created his own trademark and formed the "Alain Delon Diffusion SA" company in Geneva. His first fragrance, "AD", immediately met with huge commercial success. This was followed in 1981 by a fragrance for women "Le Temps d'Aimer". Champagne, cognac, watches, spectacles, clothing and accessories were gradually added to complete the range of his label.

Alain Delon also performed a duet with Dalida of the Mina song "Paroles, Paroles". Shirley Bassey has also recorded that song in English with Al Corley and it became Remember.
