春秋末年，吳國和越國因戰爭結下仇怨。吳王夫差為父報仇，在伍子胥的輔佐下日夜勤兵。

　　得意之時的勾踐鑄成“王者之劍”，欲滅吳國而後快。不想，夫差已攻進“劍廬”，伍子胥領兵已渡過大江。勾踐大敗。

　　大兵壓境，越國危在旦夕，範蠡提出降吳的主張。為保留一線複國的機會，勾踐接受了範蠡的意見，降吳為奴。

　　勾踐從此為吳王養馬、拉車，為了複國的大誌受盡屈辱。苟且偷生中，默默等待著。

　　伍子胥認為不殺勾踐必留後患，夫差卻不以為然，一個亡國的奴隸，是翻不起什麽大浪來的。

　　太宰伯噽向夫差薦上越女西施。在伯噽府，夫差見到了美麗絕倫的西施，為她的美貌所傾倒。

　　伍子胥勸說吳王，切不可相信勾踐。但勾踐的謹慎行事，使得吳王漸漸地放鬆了警惕，伍子胥的所有諫言也被他當作耳旁之風。勾踐和範蠡在暗中逐漸得到了轉機，並被夫差準予回越國。回國後勾踐仍然謹慎從事，一點一滴地積蓄力量，休養生息。

　　伍子胥一再阻攔意欲北進做霸主的吳王，最終卻被夫差賜死。吳國實力頓時削弱。勾踐終於得到了機會，舉兵複國。

　　姑蘇破城之日，勾踐率大軍在伍子胥自刎之地向其致敬。敗於勾踐之手的夫差也拔劍自刎。

　　越王勾踐，終於曆經十數年的臥薪嚐膽、韜光養晦、勵精圖治，實現了複國的宏願。
