Story of an old building
Did a job. Removed 2 floors of back masonry wall. Did shoring. Was nervous for a few days, especially those days during Irene. Nothing happened. Building was safe.
Engineer was there every now and then. Met him once, but it was during their meeting. GC called me to down. He's an old engineer. Nice guy. Pretty experienced. He likes visiting sites. I like engineers with plenty of site experiences. Many of them don't like to get down.
I had asked the scaffold guy to remove the old beams we used as planks for wedging. He did not have space. Later super told me they'd sent these beams back to office. I was happy to know that they are not going to throw them away. He told me they refinish them to use them as shelves. They make very good pieces. They have the antique, rustic chic feel to it.
I can imagine. Too bad I don't know how to do it myself. Like to learn it some day.
I said to him, good to know. These old pieces, once they are gone they are gone. Those beams must have been at least half a century old.
We kept some bricks too. Built them back to the walls.
