Scarborough Fair中的解讀

Scarborough最早在大約一千年前由Viking(維京)人在英格蘭的西北部North Yorkshire 登陸後逐漸成為一個重要的港口。中世紀時期，Scarborough是來自全英格蘭甚至還有歐洲的商人經常聚集的一個海邊重鎮。Scarborough Fair在曆史上是一個從八月十五日開始延續45天的交易集市。在那個年代持續如此之長的集市是很少見的。後來這個集市逐漸冷清衰落，現在Scarborough隻是一個默默無聞的小鎮了。
作為歌曲，Scarborough Fair原是一首古老(大約作於十三世紀)的蘇格蘭民間謎歌 (riddle song)。那個年代不像現在有版權的說法，因此歌曲的作者沒有能夠留下姓名。這樣的謎歌由漂流各地的遊唱詩人(bard或shaper)輾轉傳唱。因此年深月久，衍化出許多不同的歌詞版本。
下麵的歌詞是比較全的傳統版本：

起初這首歌被英國民歌之父Ewan MacColl 選進他編輯的一本介紹英國民歌的書中，英國民歌手Martin Carthy後來又進行了再創作。1966年底，Paul Simon在英國時將它改編成反戰色彩濃厚的歌曲，並收入他的專輯Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme之中，後用作電影The Graduate的中插曲(其中的The Sound of Silence是另一首廣為流傳的歌)。 Simon是猶太美國人，在英國劍橋攻讀文學專業。他在與 Carthy合作演唱時從Carthy那裏學會了這首歌，又把自己寫的一首反戰歌曲The Side Of A Hill作為副歌和這首歌混在一起，用對比的手法表達了對和平的渴望。
Art Garfunkel似乎是學數學出身，為副歌作了曲，成為歌中的"頌歌"部分。兩人在錄音時利用多軌技術把多個聲部疊加在一起，使人聲顯得特別豐富。據說崔健在"七合板樂隊"時的一張專輯裏也曾翻唱過這首歌曲。
