Today's topic was repeated. I heard about it last time.It was about introduction to solid foods to baby.

 

It was goootd to learn one more time. New stuff I have known and for me it was a good review.

 

Last time when I heard, my baby was at 6 to 9 months group, now she is 9 to 12 months group, the focus point is different.

 

For 6 to 9 months group, the milk products(cow's milk,plain yogurt,cheese etc are not recommended but other food groups e.g.infant cereal,meat and alternatives,vegetables and fruits can be pureed and offer to them. From 9 to 12 months old, babies can have homo cow's milk from a cup,about 2 cups by 1 year,and yogurt,cheese can offer to them.

 

For 9 to 12 months old: Breastfeeding or formula on demand,any iron fortified infant cereal up to 3/4 cup by end of first year,can add 1/3 cup fry cereal by 11 months,also can add toast,cooked rice and pasta,minced or diced small cooked meat,fish,chicken,tofu,beans,eggs,by the end of the first year,average meat/alternatives intake is 6 tablespoons.Mashed or diced small cooked vegetables,soft fresh fruits,peeled seeded and diced,canned fruit diced small packed in water or juice,by the end of the first year,average vegetable intake is about 14 tablespoons of vegetables and fruits in a day.

 

Infants under one year of age should avoid eating honey,added salt and added sugar.

 

For 6 to 9 months old, offer solid food after breastfeeding or formula feeding, but for 9 to 12 months old, it is okay to offer solid foods before the breastfeeding or formula.

 

Make sure all the foods are in 1/4 to 1/2 inch cubes or pieces to avoid choking, avoid hard food like nuts,raisins,berries,grapes,candies.Stay with your baby at all times when they eat.

 

Once your baby has tried foods from all the groups it is okay to offer the same healthy foods you offer the rest of the family.

 

Feed your baby at regular times, babies like routine.Introduce new foods when your baby is happy.Once fruits have been tried, offer water if the baby is still thirsty.Offer one new food at a time,wait for 5 days before introduce new food,if there is a allergic reaction then you know it is because of which food.Offer foods based on baby's likes and dislikes not yours.

 

For 9 to 12 months old, the sample menus is:

Breakfast:breast or formula milk,iron-fortified infant cereal,soft fruit.

Snack:dry cereal,breast milk or homogenized milk from a cup

Lunch:iron-fortified infant cereal,choped meat or meat alternatives,cooked pasta or cooked rice,chopped vegetables,soft fruit,breast milk or homo milk

Snack:plain muffin,cubes of sofe cheese,breast or homo milk

Dinner:chopped meat or meat alternatives,cooked pasta or cooked rice,chopped vegetables,soft fruit and/or plain yogurt,breast milk

snack:breast milk,small pieces of toast,bread,crackers

 

Continue to breastfeed your baby on demand,give breast milk after solid foods at mealtimes.

 

For eating fish, there are the fishes that are safe to eat everyday:(very low Mercury)

Bass,Capelin,Milkfish,Octopus,Oysters,Pollock,Salmon canned,Salmon(pink,wild pacific,chum,coho)

Sea Urchin,Silver Pomfrer,Tilapia

Fishes that are safe to eat often:(Low Mercury)

Anchovies,Arctic Char,Atlantic Mackerel,Clams,Grass Carp,Hering,Mussels,Porgie,Salmon(Chinook,Sockeys,Steelhead),Sardines,Sea Cucumber,Shiner,Smelt,Sole,Squid,Trout(rainbow),Tuna(Skipjack,Tongol,Yellowfin)

Safe to eat sometimes(Medium Mercury)

Black Pomfret,Catfish,Halibut,Jackfish,Kingfish(King Mackerel,Spanish Mackerel),Lake Whitefish,Mahi Mahi(Dolphin Fish),Perch,Redfish,Sablefish(Black Cod),Skate,Snapper(Various species),Trout(Lake,various species),Tuna(Skipjack,Southern,Yellowfin),Tuna(canned white,Alvacore)
