旅遊

Port Hope is a famous tourism, historic small town by its history, salmon, trout fishes watching, fish sporting etc.It was a big harbour before Toronto took place of it.

Population of Port Hope is around 17000. Its first settlements went back 1820's. I met a nice lady and she told me she is the fifth generation that settle down in this town.

We saw lots of salmon fishes in Ganaraska river which runs through the town. At the river mouth to Lake Ontario many people were fishing there. The lady told me last weekend there was a fishing contest took place here. To see who catch the biggest fish.

Salmon fishes traveled from Atlantic Ocean every year in Fall season, by St.Lawrence river into Lake Ontario, they traveled thousands of miles back here-the fresh water river where they were born to spawn. After laying eggs, they will become so exhausted and die.I admire their spirits.

They are challenging the rapid water currents to up stream. To across so many obstacles-small or big dams on the river to the calmer up stream, up , up, swim, jump to the dams, jump to the currents, the destination is finding an ideal, calm, safe spot in up steam to lay their eggs. To give their off springs a peaceful, food-abundant, safe spot to grow. Then the small fishes will swim back to the ocean.

On Molson street, there is a big dam to make a small fall on the river, the first eye when you see the dam, you will know there is no way that the salmon fishes can jump over it. Fortunately there is a smaller dam like a passway beside the big one and that is the only way the fishes can go through. Still it is very hard for them to jump into this "hole", the water current from this hole is very rapid. They rush the fishes away when they try to jump over. Over and over again they try, being rushed back to the water by the currents, take a break, they try again, there are some people like us watching them , and cheers for them when we see them finally successfully jump over and pass through. Still there are a few can't make it and die sadly before reach their destination.

In spring time, there are trout fishes do the same thing, to come to this river and swim to up stream. Two seasons for fishes watching. Spring for trout, Fall for salmon. That is why the river and the town became so famous.

We also walked on the downtown street, those buildings by the streets looks like in the old time, they must have 200 or 300 years of history. We found this small pizzerie and tried their crisp garlic breads, tender honey garlic chicken wings and freshly baked Hawalian Pizza. Every thing is freshed made or baked to make the food so delicious. Price is very reasonable too. I think the food here is better than in Toronto. Next time I will come back again.

After enjoyed a warm early autumn day in Port Hope, we returned to Toronto with some good momories.
