（轉自：波波@RBM 的翻譯）前探員Adrian Monk（Tony Shalhoub），擁有超強的瞬間記憶力和洞察力，即使是再細小不過的線索都難逃他的法眼，因此，使得他成為了當地警界的一個傳奇。不過，自他的妻子被人謀殺後，蒙克似乎變了一個人，巨大的傷痛使他無法自拔，並出現了種種強迫性症狀。一個好端端的蒙克變得脾氣暴躁，任何一點小事都可能激怒他：細菌、人群、高度——甚至還包括牛奶。這些症狀不但漸漸令他丟了工作，更令其日常生活受到困擾。離開舊金山警局之後, MONK一直在當私家偵探，專門解決疑難的案件，他希望可以說服他的前上司Leland Stottlemeyer隊長（Ted Levine），讓他回歸警隊效力。第一季裏，Stottlemeyer是搖擺不定，一方麵，monk的能力確實罕見，他很需要monk的幫忙，另一方麵，他卻十分討厭monk的那種精神問題。但Stottlemeyer已經開始更多的變成monk的一個朋友，而不隻是上司，並經常叫monk到現場幫忙。可還是因為monk的那些精神問題，Stottlemeyer始終不肯讓monk佩槍，也不相信monk可以製服任何一名歹徒。與此同時， Stottlemeyer的助手，Randall Disher副隊長（Jason Gray-Stanford）似乎也在動搖。正一點一點地被monk的能力所征服。

無論如何，這個三人小組正變得越來越有默契，當然，其中少不了monk的私人助手的幫忙。在第三季的前兩集試播的時候，monk的助手是曾經對他進行急救的私人護士Sharona Fleming（Bitty Schram）。但在第三季的第十集裏，Sharona被新助手Natalie Teeger（Traylor Howard）取代了。像Sharona離婚後帶著個兒子Benjy一樣，Natalie離婚後帶著個女兒Julie（Emmy Clarke）。但不同的是，Natalie不像Sharona那樣說話帶有鮮明的特征，並始終稱呼她的新老板“monk先生”。
