I'm wondering how much would be enough to retire comfortably? A friend of mine recently declared retirement. He said he went to a financial adviser, brought records of his savings, exclude primary residence, include 401k, IRA, pension, and other investment etc. The adviser told him that he can retire and can live comfortably until at least 90 years old. He has a family of 4, wife doesn't work. One child in college, one in high school. He is 50 years old.
He has 1.8 million in his savings. He has a very small mortgage in his house (less than 100k).
Now, he is retired, i.e. doesn't have to work for money. He'll work if a project falls in his way. He is a civil engineer, building roads, bridges, etc. Recent years he worked as an expert witness in the field.
I would think many Chinese Americans fit into this category if they make 24w for years. Have you considered retirement this year? So you can go back to China, travel, 到這裏來灌水, or do whatever your heart desire.
Someone was asking would they have a comfortable living?
Comfortable is a relative term. I guess maintain their current living standard is a better word.
In their case, 100,000/year income from the savings, with a conservatively 6% return rate. They consider this is comfortable for 2 people.
Children's tuition will draw from education fund created when they were born plus student loans.
