Whenever one ventures out into mass humanity one must realize that our culture's favorite verbal pastime is to complain.

And it doesn't really matter what people complain about.

Itis almost like complaining is a game in which one must find more tocomplain about than his coffee or beer mate has to complain about.

The wife, the kids, the boss, the government, or even big feet can all qualify as contents of complaint.

Were there ever good times that were good enough to overcome this manic need to complain?

Smokeyremembers his Hispanic grandparents who immigrated from Mexico in theGreat Depression Thirties. They got low-wage jobs and bought modesthomes in L.A. They then sent their sons off to WWII and their daughtersout to the workforce.

His earliest memory was laying under anumbrella tent on Redondo Beach while his Papacito surf-fished and thewomen chatted. He can only remember happy talk and laughing.

Evenlater as a young boy, his L.A. County fireman father did not want ourlittle town to incorporate as a city where he couldn't work near home.Did he complain? No... smokey and his little brother followed himaround the town while he got signatures on a "No On Incorporation"petition.

Even when the town incorporated, smokey's dad did not complain.

So... what is different now?

Why is complaining such a hair-trigger reaction?

Whyis it that we cannot fire up the Vega, venture out to the caffeine den,sit our butts within audio range of mere mortals and hear nothing butcomplaints?

Folks...

Our world is upside-down and backwards.

Having everything you want only instills more desires and the complaints that come when they are not fulfilled.

Not having what you want eventually makes you happy with what you have.

Are we ready for the Mega-Depression yet?
