Raw converation vs. Jpeg

Just started to use Raw. I usually shoot Raw + Jpeg. It seems that Jpeg converted from Raw is a whole lot sharper than straight Jpeg. I know that Raw retains more details but the difference is bigger than I thought. Is it normal?
