Tissue Engineering

Tissue Engineering was initially coined by NSF (National Science Foundation) in 1987 as “the application of the principles and methods of engineering and life sciences toward the fundamental understanding of structure-function relationships in normal and pathological mammalian tissues, and the development of biological substitutes to restore tissues”.In a tissue engineering system, isolated cells are seeded onto the scaffolds which are fabricated from biodegradable polymers, and then cultured in static or dynamic environment (Bioreactor) to promote cell proliferation and function. Finally a tissue-like construct is formed in vitro which could be implanted into the human body to regenerate defective tissues.
