January 3rd, 2005.
Today is my first day with company B in downtown. I quitted company M before the New Year as I mentioned in the previous dairy. Right now, I am on the train back to home. I am exhausted.
After I told my boss in company M about leaving, I have not really been there or actively worked remotely. I did not like the environment there even though I already spent 6 years in Company M. Also, I was so tired about what I was assigned in company M.
It is hard to believe that I am already in 2005. Holidays were so wonderful. We had lots of parties, shopping, and gifts. My wife got double paid and I had 3 pay checks in December 2004.
I really wanted to move out company M. Wife kept asking me during the holiday what you felt now since you were leaving and going to join a new company. Repeatedly, I told her that I felt nothing, no joy, no fear. I do not know why. Maybe, I was numbed for such a long time with company M.
Since the new job is in downtown, I got up at 6am. (Usually, I got up around 8 am when I worked in company M.) I had breakfast at home, and then left home around 6:45am for the train. My house is about 2 miles away from the Metra station, and it only takes me about 10 minutes to be there. There was almost no traffic since some companies take today as a holiday. The train left around 7:05 and be downtown at 8:15am. It was raining in the morning. (Very strange, usually it should snows in Jan)
I walked about 30 minutes from Metra station to company B, which is just beside the Lake Michigan. My office is at 40th floor. The view is beautiful. People at company B are very nice (Maybe it is my first day). One guy, Scott, who interviewed me and is first 5 people found this company, flew in from Seattle. He will help to up to speed and will stay here for a week.
Scott is a short man in age 40’s and has 3 kids, in 19, 17, and 15. He does not like any sport and not a big eater. He helped me to install all tools and software, pointed me document links, and helped me to make a build with CVS. At the same time, he found a few bugs with the project files.
Around 4:30PM, he asked me when I need to go home. I told him that I would stay here as long as he stays, since I will take the advantage of his being here to learn as much as possible from him. He said good and told me that he would leave when he felt tired. I was surprised and wondering when this guy was going to be tired. After a while, I heard that a couple ladies were chatting and a good smell was floating in the room. I thought that it would be that some amigo, cleaner, were preparing their late dinner. The smell was very good and my stomach started complaining. Suddenly, Scott said to me: let’s get some food. He walked me to the kitchen. Surprising, there is some Tai food in the kitchen. Actually, the company B orders dinner for engineers. The food is not bad at all. After dinner, Scott told me that he was tired and ran away in 5 minutes.
I always ran to the Metra station and took next train in 8:35PM.
It is my first day.
