I just moved to a new city because of job change. This is the first time I moved after 10 years in the state. It is pain.
The company will pay for the relocation and so I do not need to worry too much about the cost. I thought I did not have much furniture. When I filled up a form on the internet to find a moving company, I thought my stuff all together might be just about two thousands pounds or so. I did not do too much before the moving date coming because I am hesitating to move. I just packed up some small stuff and left the other stuff for the moving company to pack for me. I was told by some friends that the moving company could do a much better packing for me.
When the moving date came, the moving company did not come at their scheduled time. I called them several times and I was told that they were coming. They were delayed becasue of the bad traffic and so. When the moving company came, it is already late afternoon with only two people. I was worried if they could finish in the moving day! My air ticket the in the following day. If they could not finish, I would be in trouble.
The two men, one white and one black are strong. They started to pack right away. I was helping them to pack and to move stuff downstairs at first. After several hours, I was exausted, however, the two men were still working. I bought two big pizza during the moving and they ate them all. I thaught that I am strong; however, compared to them, I am really weak.
The packing and moving continued until about 8:00pm. I threw out almost all of my furniture and kept most of other stuff. I had a lot of books I did not want to discard. I am always fond of buying books. You guess how many boxes I got? more than 100 boxes. Later on, I was told that the total weight is about 7,000 pounds. This surprised me. I did not have any heavy furniture. I have about four book shelves of books.
I did not have an address when my stuff was picked up. My stuff was sent to storage at first. I was told that after I got an address, my stuff will be moved quickly. However, up till now, three weeks has been passed, I still have not received my stuff yet. I called the company and I was told the stuff is on the way and I will be called 24 hours in advance. Several days has passed, I still have not got it.
I have lived in the new apartment for two weeks with an airbed without any furniture. I bought a bed and it will be delivered tomorrow. Do I need the stuff in transporting? What I need is just a dining table, a bed, some chairs. I can buy this by spending much less than the moving cost.
What I learned from this moving is that the basic living is quite simple. We have too much stuff and complicated our life. Next time, if I need to move again, I will take this lesson and get rid of 80% of my stuff.
