I have not visited my blogs for a long time. Most of my paragraphs here were posted more than one year ago. After such a long time, when I read my blogs again, I found they are very interesting and all posting are with high quality. It will be good for me if I can continue my postings. Four years ago, I made a promise to improve my English, especially listenning abilities, before I turn to 40. I'm going to be 39 very soon and my listenning abilities are still poor. I can understand CNN news without many problems but I'm still having problems understanding movies. When the voices are mixed with background sounds or the actorsor actress is speaking too fast, I cannot catch a word. I like watching movies, but instead of watching new films every time, I found it is more benefical to me to watch old films again and again. For example, when I heard this conversation the first time in Fantastic Four, <"Susan, let's not fight." "No, let's".> I thought Victor Von Doom was saying "Let's unfight". That doesn't make sense, does it?

GuoLuke2 回複 悄悄話 How to say "隻見樹木不見森林" in English? It is "missing the forest for the trees". Really simple, huh?
GuoLuke2 回複 悄悄話 It has nothing to do with the parent blog but I just don't want to create a new thread. Pay attention to the usage of "win out over" in the following sentence: "A 'catch' block with an exact match wins out over a more general exception".
GuoLuke2 回複 悄悄話 I learned some English from a cartoon movie my daughter is watching. "Trust is something you have to earn.". Interesting! Trust is like money since you have to earn money. However, if you're lucky enough, you can win some lottery. Does it count to the money you earned? I don't think so.
GuoLuke2 回複 悄悄話 "Victor, stop. This isn't a negotiation. This is a notification. We're pulling out."
"Either we're moving really fast or not at all"
"It's very generous of you."
GuoLuke2 回複 悄悄話 Another part in Fantastic Four I couldn't figure out what I was hearing is this conversation between Ben Grimm and an old lady:
Ben: I need to borrow your car.
Old lady: The transmission sticks.
Ben: That's not gonna be a problem.
The voice of the old lady is mixed with background noises and I can tell just "sticks" but not "transmission". I had to ask my daughter for help and she told me it was "transmission".
