Brian McKnight出生於1969年6月5日，美國紐約市。他成長於一個音樂世家，全家都是當地教堂唱詩班的成員。他的祖父是指揮。在這種宗教信仰的熏陶下，McKnight還從中了解到了其他音樂知識。 在他很小的時候就開始嚐試著寫一些簡單的曲子（軟爵士，簡單好聽的那種）。很快，他組織了自己的樂隊並且在本地開始演出。18歲的時候，McKnight獲得了出唱片的機會。他加入了有他哥哥Claude在內的Take 6樂團，並和一家唱片公司簽定了合同。

在推出了相當數量的DEMO之後，McKnight吸引了Mercury Records 總裁Ed Eckstine 的目光。Eckstine很欣賞McKnight的嗓音，並且在兩個禮拜之內月他簽定了合同。McKnight第一次在公司旗下推出了The Way Love Goes"，在公告牌節奏布魯斯排行榜上停留了19個禮拜並達到了第十一名的成績。不過他後來的兩支單曲都未能突破公告牌節奏布魯斯排行榜60名以內。其中一首名為"Love Is"的歌，是與黑人女歌星Vanessa Williams 合作的，不過諷刺的是，這首歌曲雖然在節奏布魯斯榜上無名，但在流行榜上卻爬到了第三的位置。但不管怎麽樣，還是為McKnight爭取到了一些歌迷。

他的第二張專輯《I Remember You》賣了5萬張左右，其中有5首單曲都進了公告牌節奏布魯斯榜前20。這時McKnight的名聲已經確立了，這時，公司決定停止一切工作把精力都放在他的第三張專輯《Anytime》上麵。首個單曲"You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste Your Time)"推出，在全美音樂排行榜上到了17名位置，這首歌是由說唱歌手MA與他合作的，試圖將HIP HOP歌迷盡可能的拉到McKnight的擁護者中。不管怎樣，這首歌曲已經代表了這張專輯會是十分成熟的節奏布魯斯以及浪漫情歌的組合。專輯登上了全美銷售榜的20名以內。然後McKnight轉投到著名黑人音樂唱片Motown Records，並推出了聖誕專輯《 Bethlehem》。 隨後在1999年推出了大受歡迎的《Back at One》，這張專輯隻用了幾周時間就爬上了全美銷售榜第二的位置。

2001年，Brian McKnight推出了他的第五張專輯，《Superhero》 。這張專輯依舊延續了McKnight一貫擅長的浪漫中板節奏布魯斯情歌風格。不過裏麵有些歌曲也體現出他敢於創新改變的另一麵。標題曲Superhero就是一首穩健硬朗的搖滾歌曲，全部配器都由電吉他和人力打擊樂器組成。一向溫和的McKnight也玩了玩幾乎從未嚐試過的風格。在歌曲中還有他一段尖嘯，效果不錯。在額外歌曲"Groovin' Tonight," 中，他和Nate Dogg 合作了一個活潑的R&B即興，這個組合倒是挺有趣。回到他擅長的曲路上來，"My Kind of Girl," 是他與'N Sync'裏的Justin Timberlake合作的。這是首溫和甜美的歌曲，清亮的原聲吉他伴奏其中。這兩個歌手的精彩表現給歌曲添加了更高的感染力。不過這張專輯也並不是那麽完美，歌曲的連貫性不是很好。而且 McKnight溫和的性格和比較傳統的節奏布魯斯表演方式雖然有著一些忠實聽眾，但變化過少難免有點單調，這大概也是他始終不能大紅大紫的原因。這張專輯也許不能評價為超級經典，不過還是足夠傑出。傑出到今年第四十四屆格萊美給了McKnight總共5項提名，而到底能拿到幾個獎，不到評比出來那天，誰也不知道。
