China and Taiwan Getting Along at the Grassroots Level

In 1987, mainland China and its renegade island started allowing personnel exchanges.

Since then, more than 40 million people from Taiwan have made the cross-strait trip to the mainland. Taiwan's current population is only 23 million.

The number of visitors from Taiwan has been rising 14% annually.

By contrast, from the mainland, just 1.3 million visitors have ventured to Taiwan...still a 19% annual rise.
