喜歡FRIENDS很久了，覺得這個SITCOM不僅有趣，而且更是學習地道英語口語的絕佳材料。沒事的時候就喜歡看幾集，寓教於樂。這段時間正好有空，決定開始把這幾年看FRIENDS總結的筆記徹底整理一下。最近上網看到了一些網友作的FRIENDS的筆記，發現大部分都是側重於詞的用法，而對其中的一些潛在的文化上的東西講解的不是很多（也許是我孤陋寡聞吧），所以就有了想把詞匯和文化背景結合起來，做一個係列的FRIENDS筆記的念頭。記得我最初看FRIENDS時，最大的困惑就是片中觀眾笑的地方，自己往往不明白人家為什麽笑，雖然從字麵上看也沒有聽不懂的詞，可就是不明白語言背後深層的涵義，所以一來我也希望做這個筆記的過程中，在把過去自己不明白的地方設法搞明白，二來希望我的這個筆記會對大家在英語學習中有些幫助，三來也希望大家能幫偶解決其中偶也還沒搞明白的地方，拋磚引玉，大家共同交流學習。
The One Where Monica Gets a New Roommate (The Pilot)
*pilot: 原意是導航員,在這裏是指試播.一般美國在一個電視節目正式播出之前會先推出一集來測試節目播出效果,以對節目內容和播出時間作適當調整.
SCENE 1: CENTRAL PERK. (ALL PRESENT EXCEPT RACHEL AND ROSS)
*Central perk:眾所周知NEW YORK 有一個CENTRAL PARK (中央公園),所以這個咖啡館取名為CENTRAL PERK, 因為 PERK 和PARK 諧音.英語中有很多類似這種諧音的用法,類似我們漢語裏的同音/諧音詞.
MONICA: There's nothing to tell! He's just some guy I work with!
JOEY: C'mon, you're going out with the guy! There's gotta be something wrong with him.
這裏很明顯JOEY在取笑MONICA.也說明MONICA以前交往的男友,其他人都不喜歡,這也為本季後麵一集的故事做了鋪墊.
*gotta: 口語中常用. 等於going to.類似的用法還有: wanna=want to
*something wrong with sb./sth. 某人/某事有問題,不對勁
CHANDLER: So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece?
*hump: 駝背
*hairpiece: a piece of false hair used to make one’s own hair seem thicker,假發
*這是典型的CHANDLER的諷刺.
PHOEBE: Wait, does he eat chalk?
*PHOEBE的幽默,有點象我們所說的無厘頭式的幽默.順便說一句,FRIENDS在美國播了10年,這些演員也演了10年同樣的角色,而且每個演員都賦予他/她所飾演的角色一些很鮮明的個性.這些個性的表露都是很自然,不漏聲色的,需要我們從角色的每一句台詞,每一個細微的動作,表情或眼神中去細細品位個中的幽默之處.
(THE OTHERS STARE, BEMUSED)
*bemused:被逗樂了.
PHOEBE: Just, 'cause, I don't want her to go through what I went through with Carl- oh!
*PHOEBE開始解釋了.Carl這個人物隻在這裏被提過一次,我們隻能推斷CARL是PHOEBE的前男友,而且此人可能有EAT CHALK的怪毛病.
MONICA: Okay, everybody relax. This is not even a date. It's just two people going out to dinner and- not having sex.
CHANDLER: Sounds like a date to me.
*很顯然大家並不相信MONICA所說的這隻是一個普通的約會的說法. 在美語中,DATE如果沒有特殊說明就是指一男一女晚上一起約會,約會的內容往往是先吃飯,然後或者去看電影,或者再去酒吧什麽的,更進一步的還會共度良宵.但這並不表明兩人就已經是男女朋友的關係,一切還要看以後的發展.所以在美國當有人問你: ARE YOU DATING SOMEBODY? 並不一定是問你有沒有男/女朋友, 而隻是問你你有沒有”候選人”.
(CUT TO SAME SET)
CHANDLER: Alright, so I'm back in high school, I'm standing in the middle of the cafeteria, and I realize I am totally naked.
*大家的話題從MONICA的DATE轉移了.CHANDLER開始講他的一個夢.
*CAFETERIA:在北美幾乎所有的學校都有一個CAFETERIA.有的大一些的其實就象是我們的食堂,中午會有午餐出售,有的小一點的會有微波爐供大家熱飯.而且CAFETERIA也是學生們舉行聚會的一個重要場所. 而且CAFETERIA裏通常都會有自動售貨機,提供咖啡和飲料,所以這裏也是學生們下課後的一個重要活動地點.所以CHANDLER在這樣一個地方NAKED,無疑是很尷尬的了.
ALL: Oh, yeah. Had that dream.
CHANDLER: Then I look down, and I realize there's a phone... there.
*從CHANDLER的表情和眼神看,我們知道他是指那個”重要”部位.
JOEY: Instead of...?
CHANDLER: That's right.
JOEY: Never had that dream.
PHOEBE: No.
CHANDLER: All of a sudden, the phone starts to ring. And it turns out it's my mother, which is very weird, because- she never calls me!
*ALL OF A SUDDEN: 突然地; =SUDDENLY
*turn out: 結果是. Eg. I was so worried about my exam scores, but it turns out to be very good.
*weird:奇怪的.這個詞在日常生活中常用;與BIZARD同義. 從後麵的故事中我們會知道CHANDLER和他父母的關係並不是很好.
(CUT TO SAME SET. ROSS HAS NOW ENTERED)
ROSS: (MORTIFIED) Hi.
*motified: motify的過去分詞. 感情受到傷害的
JOEY: This guy says hello, I wanna kill myself.
*可見ROSS的HI是一個非常UNHAPPY的HI.
MONICA: Are you okay, sweetie?
*SWEETIE,甜心.這種稱呼在美國使用的非常普遍,可以用於任何朋友,同事之間,但一般除了特別親密的家人朋友之間(這種關係下,女的可以稱呼男的SWEETIE,象ROSS 和MONICA),往往隻是男的稱呼女的,或者女的之間,很少女的這麽稱呼男的,或者男的之間用.類似的用法還有:MY DEAR. 但是HONEY一般隻是用於男女朋友或夫妻之間,不能濫用.
ROSS: I just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck...
*無疑ROSS現在的感覺是很痛苦的.這種感覺,我想有過痛苦經曆的人,尤其是失戀經曆的人可能都會有過,好象有人勒住了你的脖子,讓你覺得好象都呼吸困難了,隻是ROSS說的更形象一點吧: 好象有人把手伸進了他的喉嚨,把他的小腸一把抓出,並繞在了他的脖子上.
CHANDLER: Cookie?
*COOKIE: 泛指小點心,小餅幹.
顯然CHANDLER還不知道ROSS為什麽會這樣.
MONICA: (EXPLAINING TO THE OTHERS) Carol moved her stuff out today. (TO ROSS) Let me get you some coffee.
*CAROL是ROSS的前妻.和ROSS結婚後才慢慢意識到自己是一個女”同誌”.所以和ROSS離婚了.
*stuff:泛指一些東西,事情. 這裏是指CAROL把她的東西搬走了.
Eg. You like cooking? I am not interested in that kind of stuff.
PHOEBE: Ooh! Oh! (STARTS TO PLUCK AT THE AIR JUST IN FRONT OF ROSS)
*PHOEBE有時就是這麽神神叨叨的.她覺的ROSS太倒黴了,覺的這樣可以抓掉他的一些晦氣.
*Pluck: 抓,揪
eg. She tried to pluck out some of her grey hairs.
Do you pluck your eyebrows?
ROSS: No, no don't! Stop cleansing my aura! No, just leave my aura alone, okay? I'll be fine, alright? Really, everyone. I hope she'll be very happy.
*顯然ROSS並不喜歡她這樣.ROSS可是一個古生物學家呢,他才不信這邪呢.但以ROSS的性格他也不會讓PHOEBE難堪,所以他用反話來說:別趕走我的靈氣.
*Aura: an effect or feeling that seems to surround and come from a person or place; (人或地方的)氣氛,氣息,韻味
MONICA: No you don't.
ROSS: No I don't, to hell with her, she left me!
*to hell with sb.某人下地獄去吧. 這句話在人們生氣時也常用.
JOEY: And you never knew she was a lesbian...
*LESBIAN:女”同誌”; GAY: 男”同誌”;STRAIGHT:異性戀的。
ROSS: No!! Okay?! Why does everyone keep fixating on that? She didn't know, how should I know?
Fixate (on): Thinking, talking,etc. continuously about one particular thing, so as not to give enough attention to anything else. Eg. The popular newspapers seem to be fixated on stories about sex and drugs.
CHANDLER: Sometimes I wish I was a lesbian... (THE OTHERS STARE AT HIM) Did I say that out loud?
*CHANDLER本以為隻有他自己能聽見,但他說的太大聲了…
JOEY: Alright Ross, look. You're feeling a lot of pain right now. You're angry. You're hurting. Can I tell you what the answer is?
(ROSS GESTURES HIS CONSENT)
*ROSS示意讓他說.
JOEY: Strip joint! C'mon, you're single! Have some hormones!
*Strip joint: 脫衣舞廳. Strip dance: 脫衣舞. Strip girl: 脫衣舞娘
*按照JOEY的理解,ROSS的痛苦隻需解決了HORMONE的問題就可以解決了.可見他並不明白ROSS真正痛苦的原因.誰讓JOEY是個PLAY BOY 呢?
ROSS: I don't want to be single, okay? I just... I just- I just wanna be married again!
(ENTER RACHEL IN A WET WEDDING DRESS. SHE STARTS TO SEARCH AROUND THE ROOM)
CHANDLER: And I just want a million dollars! (EXTENDS HIS HAND HOPEFULLY)
*CHANDLER看到ROSS剛說想結婚馬上就有一個新娘出現,所以他說他想要一百萬.這是CHANDLER的幽默之處.
MONICA: Rachel?!
RACHEL: Oh God Monica hi! I just went to your building and you weren't there and then this guy with a big hammer said you might be here and you are, you are!
WAITRESS: Can I get you some coffee?
MONICA: (POINTING AT RACHEL) De-caff. (TO THE GANG) Okay, everybody, this is Rachel, another Lincoln High survivor. (TO RACHEL) This is everybody, this is Chandler, and Phoebe, and Joey, and- you remember my brother Ross?
*De-caff :不含咖啡因的咖啡.可能MONICA看RACHEL已經這麽興奮了,擔心她再喝上含咖啡因的咖啡會更興奮,所以給她點DE-CAFF ; 也可能因為她們是多年好友,她可能知道RACHEL的嗜好. 再多說幾句 : 現在越來越多的人更注重健康的飲食,人們知道常喝含咖啡因的咖啡可能會對健康不利,而且這種咖啡喝多了也容易引起失眠,所以很多人都開始喝DE-CAFF的COFFEE,或者有的人給自己規定下午幾點以後隻喝DE-CAFF的COFFEE. 另外還有低脂肪的牛奶(LOW FAT MILK),健康可樂(DIET COKE),健康百事(DIET PEPSI), 等等.

RACHEL: Hi, sure!
ROSS: Hi.
(THEY GO TO HUG BUT ROSS' UMBRELLA OPENS. HE SITS, DEFEATED AGAIN)
*DEFEATED:被擊敗的,沮喪的
(A MOMENT OF SILENCE AS RACHEL SITS; THE OTHERS EXPECT HER TO EXPLAIN)
MONICA: So you wanna tell us now, or are we waiting for four wet bridesmaids?
*BRIDEMAIDS : 伴娘. BESTMAN: 伴郎
*MONICA看到RACHEL進來時是濕露露的,所以開玩笑說是不是還有4個濕露露的伴娘要來.
RACHEL: Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in the room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat. This really gorgeous Lamauge gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (TO WAITRESS, WHO HAS BROUGHT HER COFFEE)Sweet 'n' Lo?- I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. Y'know, I mean, he always looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out of there, and I started wondering 'Why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for?'. (TO MONICA) So anyway I just didn't know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but you're the only person I knew who lived here in the city.
*Gravy: 1. The juice which comes out of meat as it cooks, thickened with flour, etc., to serve with meat and vegetables; 2. something pleasing or valuable that happens or is gained easily.
*Gravy boat: A small deep long-shaped container with a handle, from which gravy can be poured at a meal 船形盛肉汁的有柄器皿
**Gravy train: 美差,肥缺. Eg: There’s so much money invested in this political campaign that everyone’s trying to climb on the gravy train.
*Lamouge: 一種法國的餐具品牌
*Sweet’n’low: 一種英國的低糖產品的品牌。從這一點,我們也可以看出RACHEL的性格,一般人在這種時候哪還有心思管這個,可是RACHEL不是這樣的.這樣不合時宜的問題逗人發笑，也是RACHEL的可愛之處.
*Turned on: something that excites or interests one strongly, esp. sexually
RACHEL發現一個漂亮的餐具竟然比BARRY更能激起她的”性”趣, 這突然引發了她對於自己和BARRY關係的思考.
*FREAK OUT: 發瘋 v. 有怪癖的人, n. FREAK在美國口語中使用頻率很高. EG. He’s kind of freak on film. 他喜歡電影幾近瘋狂. I am almost freaked out by so many exams.我都快被這麽多的考試逼瘋了.
*Mr. Potato Head: 卡通裏的人物,其形象就如同這個名字.

MONICA: Who wasn't invited to the wedding.
*MONICA對此耿耿於懷.
RACHEL: Ooh, I was kinda hoping that wouldn't be an issue...
*KINDA: KIND OF… 口語中常用,有時其實並沒有什麽實質性的意義,就好象我們漢語中,我們在說一句話時,中間也會說”那個…”; 有時可以翻譯成:有點…
EG.I found that Jerry might be kinda (kind of) too nice sometimes.
我發現JERRY有時有點過於友善了.
SCENE 2: MONICA'S APARTMENT (ALL PRESENT AND WATCHING A SPANISH SOAP ON TV)
*SPANISHI SOAP: 西班牙的肥皂劇.
MONICA: Now I'm guessing that he bought her the big pipe organ, and she's really not happy about it.
*Pipe Organ: 管風琴
RACHEL: (ON PHONE) Daddy, I just... I can't marry him! I'm sorry. I just don't love him. Well, it matters to me!
*MATTER: to be important. 舉個我們最常用的例子: IT DOESN’T MATTER.無所謂/沒關係.
從RACHEL的語氣我們可以聽出來,她爸爸在聽到她說她不能嫁給BARRY是因為她不愛BARRY時,一定說了”IT DOESN’T MATTER” (愛不愛又有什麽關係呢)這樣的話.
CHANDLER: (RE TV) Ooh, she should not be wearing those pants.
JOEY: I say push her down the stairs.
PHOEBE+ROSS+CHANDLER+JOEY: Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs! Push her down the stairs! (SHE IS PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS. THEY CHEER)
RACHEL: C'mon Daddy, listen to me! All of my life, everyone has always told me, 'You're a shoe! You're a shoe, you're a shoe, you're a shoe!'. And today I just stopped and I said, 'What if I don't wanna be a shoe? What if I wanna be a- a purse, y'know? Or a- or a hat! No, I'm not saying I want you to buy me a hat, I'm saying I am a ha- It's a metaphor, Daddy!
ROSS: You can see where he'd have trouble.

MONICA: Just breathe, breathe.. that's it. Just try to think of nice calm things...
PHOEBE: (SINGS) Raindrops on roses and rabbits and kittens, (RACHEL AND MONICA TURN TO LOOK AT HER)..bluebells and sleighbells and- something with mittens... La la la la...
*Sleigh: (馬拉的)雪橇
＊PHOEBE試圖唱歌來緩解RACHEL的心情，但她又有好多歌詞記不全，就隻好用LALALA來代替了。
RACHEL: I'm all better now.
PHOEBE: (GRINS AND WALKS TO KITCHEN. TO CHANDLER AND JOEY) I helped!
*Grin: to make a wide smile
MONICA: Okay, look, this is probably for the best, y'know? Independence. Taking control of your life.
JOEY: (SITTING BESIDE HER) And hey, you need anything, you can always come to Joey. Me and Chandler live across the hall. And he's away a lot.
＊ JOEY不愧是個花花公子，在這種時候也不忘了要獻殷勤。而且還強調CHANDLER並不常在家。
＊ Live across the hall:住在走廊對麵。
MONICA: Joey, stop hitting on her! It's her wedding day!
＊ MONICA明白JOEY想幹什麽，所以她說：JOEY，別趁虛而入。今天是她的大喜之日。

JOEY: What, like there's a rule or something?

(THE DOOR BUZZER SOUNDS. CHANDLER GETS IT)
CHANDLER: Please don't do that again, it's a horrible sound.
PAUL: (OVER INTERCOM) It's, uh, it's Paul.
MONICA: Buzz him in!

JOEY: Who's Paul?
ROSS: Paul the Wine Guy, Paul?
MONICA: Maybe.
JOEY: Wait. Your 'not a real date' tonight is with Paul the Wine Guy?

CHANDLER: Ooh, this is a Dear Diary moment.

MONICA: (HORRIFIED) Really?
ROSS: (NORMAL VOICE) No, go on! It's Paul the Wine Guy!
(A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. MONICA GETS IT; IT'S PAUL)
MONICA: Hi, come in! Paul, this is.. (THEY ARE ALL LINED UP NEXT TO THE DOOR)... everybody, everybody, this is Paul.
ALL: Hey! Paul! Hi! The Wine Guy! Hey!
CHANDLER: I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name. Paul, was it?
MONICA: (SHOWS PAUL IN) Two seconds.
＊SHOW Sb.IN: 把某人請進來。
PHOEBE: Ooh, I just pulled out four eyelashes. That can't be good.
ROSS: So Rachel, what're you, uh... what're you up to tonight?

RACHEL: Well, I was kinda supposed to be headed for Aruba on my honeymoon, so nothing!

ROSS: Right, you're not even getting your honeymoon, God.. No, no, although, Aruba, this time of year... talk about your- (THINKS) -big lizards... Anyway, if you don't feel like being alone tonight, Joey and Chandler are coming over to help me put together my new furniture.

CHANDLER: (DEADPAN) Yes, and we're very excited about it.
RACHEL: Well actually thanks, but I think I'm just gonna hang out here tonight.
＊ HANG OUT:這個短語日常生活中常用。比如:你有幾個好朋友，你們經常在一起吃飯，逛街什麽的，你可以說：I have several good friends, I usually hang out with them, like dinning out or shopping….
這裏可以理解為RACHEL今晚哪也不想去，就想在這呆著。
ROSS: Okay, sure.
JOEY: Hey Pheebs, you wanna help?
PHOEBE: Oh, I wish I could, but I don't want to.
＊ 一般情況，當別人請你幫忙，而你又沒法幫的時候，會說：I wish I could, but I ….(給出你的原因，比如你太忙了，或者你有其他事情)， 不過千萬別象PHOEBE這麽直接。
(AD BREAK)
SCENE 3: ROSS' APARTMENT (THE GUYS ARE ASSEMBLING FURNITURE)
ROSS: (SQUATTING AND READING INSTRUCTIONS) I'm supposed to attach a brackety thing to the side things, using a bunch of these little whim guys. I have no brackety thing, I see no whim guys whatsoever and- I cannot feel my legs.

＊ BRACKEY:L型支架，用於組裝傢俱。

＊ I CANNOT FEEL MY LEGS:我的腿麻了。
(CHANDLER AND JOEY HAVE APPARENTLY FINISHED A BOOKCASE, BUT THERE IS A BIT LEFT OVER)
JOEY: What's this?
CHANDLER: I have no idea.
(JOEY CHECKS ROSS IS NOT LOOKING AND DUMPS IT IN A PLANT POT)
JOEY: Done with the bookcase!
CHANDLER: All finished!
ROSS: (CLUTCHING A BEER CAN AND SNIFFING) This was Carol's favorite beer. She always drank it out of the can, I should have known.

(CUT TO MONICA AND PAUL EATING IN A RESTAURANT)
MONICA: Oh my God!
PAUL: I know, I know, I'm such an idiot. I guess I should have caught on when she started going to the dentist four and five times a week. I mean, how clean can teeth get?

PAUL: (LAUGHING) That's one way! Me, I- I went for the watch.
MONICA: You actually broke her watch?
(CUT TO RACHEL IN MONICA'S APARTMENT, TALKING ON THE PHONE AND PACING)
RACHEL: Barry, I'm sorry... I am so sorry... I know you probably think that this is all about what I said the other day about you making love with your socks on, but it isn't... it isn't, it's about me, and I ju- (STOPS TALKING; DIALS A NUMBER ON THE PHONE) Hi, machine cut me off again... anyway...

(CUT TO ROSS' APARTMENT)
ROSS: You know what the scariest part is? What if there's only one woman for everybody, y'know? I mean what if you get one woman- and that's it? Unfortunately in my case, there was only one woman- for her...
＊ ROSS在擔心他從此再也找不到適合他的另一半了。
＊ Unfortunately in my case, there was only one woman- for her… 很不幸，在我的這個事情中，是對她（CAROL）來說隻有一個女人。後麵的故事中CAROL的現任同居女友SUSAN也會出場。
