編鍾興起於西周，盛於春秋戰國直至秦漢。它由大小不同的青銅鍾按照音調高低次序排列，懸掛在鍾架上，以敲打的方式進行演奏。
曾侯乙墓出土的編鍾共65件，包括19件鈕鍾、45件甬鍾及1件楚王熊章贈送的鎛鍾，分3層8組懸掛在曲尺形鍾架上。
