Intel introduces powerful new MP server processor
Record-setting performance, day-to-day reliability, and massive amounts of onboard memory are the hallmarks of the new Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® 7100 series processors, previously codenamed “Tulsa,” which Intel is officially introducing Tuesday.
Aimed at high-end enterprise server market
The Intel Xeon 7100 series is aimed at a lucrative high-end market: multi-processor, enterprise-level servers that businesses depend on to do many important tasks at once, sometimes running 24 hours a day.
The new Xeon 7100 series offers up to two times better performance, nearly three times better performance per watt, and up to four times the performance per CPU dollar compared to previous servers in this line. And the new server processors are designed to be extremely scalable: Up to 32 processors can be linked together at one time for massive processing power, while remaining “drop-in” compatible with existing Intel chipsets.
16 megabytes of L3 cache delivers “huge performance” gains
“The biggest change in the new processor is the addition of 16MB of L3 memory cache,” says Troy Wallin, product marketing engineer at Intel’s Server Platform Group. “That allowed us to get huge gains in performance.” Having a massive 16MB memory bank on the chip allows the processor to access critical data much faster – because it doesn’t have to query the main memory as often, but can find the data right on the chip itself, Wallin said.
Processor is breaking performance records
The Dual Core Intel Xeon 7100 series has already broken world records in several benchmarks. For example, a Fujitsu-Siemens* PRIMERGY server using Xeon 7140 processors broke the 4-socket business-oriented SPECjbb™ 2005 benchmark with a score of 178,201 business operations per second. And a Dell PowerEdge 6800* server—which uses Xeon 7140M processors—broke a 4-socket benchmark measuring processors’ database performance.
As a result, applications that manage enterprise resource planning, for example, will see up to 42 percent performance gains, according to Intel engineers, with up to double the Java server performance of the previous iteration of this chip.
1.3 billion transistor chip launches ahead of schedule
With more than 1.3 billion transistors, the Xeon 7100 series is the ultimate expression of Intel’s Netburst x86 architecture. The new processors are “drop-in” compatible with Intel’s existing Truland platform based on the Intel E8501. Intel hopes that this means businesses can adopt the new processors quickly and easily, with reduced cost of ownership and validation times.
Intel development teams completed Tulsa a full quarter ahead of schedule. The processor is being manufactured by Intel employees at Fab 12 in Chandler, Arizona, and assembled and tested by employees at Intel’s Costa Rica Microprocessor Operations plant. The wafers are also processed at the Aloha Factory Operations plant in Aloha, Oregon. The processors range in price from $856 to $1980.
Servers shipping today
More than 40 system manufacturers have announced servers based on the Xeon 7100 starting as soon as today. For example, Paul Miller, Hewlett Packard’s vice president of industry-standard server marketing, said, “With a nearly 62 percent performance gain over previous models, the new platforms are ideal for virtualization and maximizing the performance of business-critical applications.”
Tom Kilroy, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group said, “The Dual-Core Xeon 7100 series processor is the best choice for demanding enterprise workloads based on new world record benchmarks, significantly outperforming the competition in key areas while not compromising on the reliability and investment protection that is so critical.”
The 7100 series processors also incorporate numerous Intel-led innovations that enhance datacenter effectiveness including Intel® Virtualization Technology that can help lower the total cost of ownership by assisting with consolidation of different software applications.
