I read three articles about Entertainment and dining in Bucks County Herald June 26, 2025. Barbara gave me the newspaper.
1) (A) Bensalem's JJ MeDonough, a rising senior at Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, won an Outstanding Performance in an Ensemble Award at the Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards Monday in New York City.
Actor/singer Josh Groban hosted the three-hour show, which pit 110 high school musical actors in an evening of performances following a week of intensive rehearsals. McDonough and Levittown's Rebecca Gutierrez, a 2025 graduate of Neshaminy High School, were part of this prestigious group.
McDonough and Gutierrez entered the Jimmys after winning the Philadelphia Independence Awards for their respective high school roles in“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and "Young Frankenstein."
(B) I think :Chinese people generally believe that if they master mathematics, physics and chemistry well, they will have nothing to fear anywhere in the world. Chinese schools do not attach much importance to music. I didn't have music classes in middle school. I don't remember having music classes in primary school either.
I learned from the Internet that music classes in American primary schools are compulsory, including joining a choir and learning the recorder, so everyone is exposed to music from a young age. In middle school, it becomes an elective course, basically involving joining bands and/or choirs. It is estimated that about one-third of the students participate.
The National High School Musical Theatre Awards, more commonly known as the Jimmy Awards, are awards given annually to recognize musical theatre performances by high school students in the United States. Two main awards are given each year, Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor.
Performers qualify as nominees by winning a regional competition in one of 51 participating regional awards programs across the country. Nominees travel to New York City to perform at a talent showcase held on Broadway. Winners and finalists receive a scholarship (in 2019, winner received $25,000 scholarships). Winners and nominees have often gone on to significant careers in musical theatre。
2)(A)“The Importance of Being Earnest” @ Kelsey Theatre
Oscar Wilde’s farcical tale depicting the tangled affairs of two men-about-town leading double lives comes to the stage of Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Theatre when Shakespeare ‘70 presents “The Importance of Being Earnest,” through June 29.
Wilde’s “trivial comedy for serious people,” now celebrating its 130th anniversary, remains as timely today as when it was first produced in 1895. The story involves two rakish young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who opt to navigate Victorian-era expectations of courtship simply by evading them. But when their personas and egos begin to collide, the pair get caught up in a wit-fueled whirlwind of mistaken identities and romantic snafus. In the end, the story reveals the absurd lengths that humans will go to in pursuit of acceptance, love, and truth.
(B) I think: It has been 130 years since the comedy "The Importance of Being Earnest” premiered in 1895, and it is still so popular. I haven't been to any cinema or theater since the Cultural Revolution. Living in a tense environment of class struggle, one has no mind to look at those things.
Now I go online every day to browse all kinds of random things. A few days ago, a film called "The Thin Man" was screened in our community room of our senior apartment. The content is a bit like a detective novel.
3(A) To beat the heat in the kitchen, put on a slow cooker.
The current heat wave will break in a day or two, around the time when you can’t bear to eat one more cold salad or sandwich.
But it’s only June and there likely will be many more hot days and nights ahead when the thought of hot food is unappealing to eat or prepare.
Slow cookers use little energy and don't create as much heat in the kitchen as when you use the stove. That makes it ideal for summer recipes including these spare ribs.
(B) I think: the main advantage of slow stewing is that it can make the meat very tender, is not about the ambient temperature. It's also great to use a slow cooker in winter. I've never used a slow cooker.
