archaic (extremely old)

Many utilities still hold on to archaic processes such as drafting by hand.

The Hawaiian Islands is an archipelago, which is formed by volcanic eruptions.

ardor (strong eagerness)

 

The ardor of high school students as exhibited by volunteering their time on helping AIDS patients toughed the mayor.

ardent (strong enthusiasm)

In 1970's, inspired by Chairman Mao's culture revolution, many ardent youngsters in China volunteered to work in the poor area of the remote western region to develop and improve the local economy there.

arduous (demanding considerable mental effort and skill)

It is an arduous job to teach children with disabilities because it requires more patience and it is more difficult to measure their learning skills.

Armageddon (great final battle)

In1960's, everyone believed that US and USSR cold war would culminate in a nuclear Armageddon.

arm-twisting (apply pressure to sb. to do sth.)
