成詩的脈絡 - 裏爾克 “亞當”

之三：詩人裏爾克旅行的時候，聖經是他隨身帶的兩本書之一。他的一些詩直接取材於聖經，這就提供了一個了解他如何寫詩的入口，所以做個嚐試：對照聖經翻譯這部分詩，以尋求詩人成詩的脈絡。這首“亞當”應該是詩人注視某個教堂的亞當雕塑所成，把這個人類始祖離開伊甸園最後一刻的決絕，凝聚成出人意料的一句：“She will bear/她會生養”，完美地將讀者視線轉到另一首詩“夏娃”，她的雕像就坐落於亞當目光的方向。

Adam/亞當

He, on the cathedral’s steep ascent,

stands and stares near where the window-rose is,

as if awed by the apotheosis

which, when it had reached its full extent,

set him over these and these below.

And he towers and joys in his duration,

plain-resolved; who started cultivation

first of all mankind, and did not know

how he’d find a way from Eden-garden,

ready-filled with all it could supply,

to the new earth. God would only harden,

and instead of granting him his prayer,

kept on threatening he should surely die.

But the man persisted: She will bear.

不會應許他的祈禱，

反而不斷警告他將必死。
