  • Hoop - /hu?p/ n.  (籃球)          籃圈,

basketball hoop - 籃球框

hoops – 用作複數也指,(the game of) basketball;

比如說play hoops – play basketball; 打籃球

 

  • be動詞 + being + 形容詞 / be動詞 + 形容詞 

 

be動詞 + being + 形容詞: 句型是指某人隻是在此刻是那樣子的(並非常態); (is/am/are) 剛剛或過去的某一刻(was/were); 這樣說有強烈的感情色彩;

 

be動詞 + 形容詞: 某人是怎麽樣的(常態)

比如剛剛朋友心情不好而說了些傻話,我們就可以說:You are being silly.

 

有人對我們說了不禮貌的話或做了冒犯的舉動

可以說:You are being rude! (你很沒禮貌!)

 

  • be based on (upon) sth. - 建立在…上; 以…為基礎, 很常用的短語

Ideally, your decision should be based upon sound reasoning. 理想情況下,你的決定應基於合理的推理。

 

  • pick-up game- 隨便組合的練習賽。

 

  • vouch for sth/sb  -  to say you firmly believe that sth. is true or good or sb. is good; to guarantee sb. or sth. is good; 為…擔保;保證… 是好的;

Amy has checked the reports and can vouch for the accuracy of the information. Amy已經核實過報告,可以保證信息的準確性。

 

  • be supposed to do sth.  - to have a responsibility to do sth.; 應該,應當(指有責任要怎樣做); to be intended to do sth.; 被期望,預期

He was supposed to finish the report by Monday, but he didn't turn it in until Wednesday. 他本應在周一之前完成報告,但直到周三他才上交報告。

 

Be supposed to / should 的區別

Be supposed to – 是個被動形式,就是被期望,負有…責任;

Should – 更多表示主觀上覺得應該做什麽什麽;

比如I am not feeling well, I should see a doctor.

 

  • Break – /breik/ v. stop functioning; 壞掉, 出故障

My computer finally broke.

  • Sharp – here it means (time) precisely /pr??sa?s.li/;exactly at the stated time (時刻)…正好,準時地;

The performance will start at 7.30 sharp. 演出將於7:30準時開始。

 

  • chicken out - to decide at the last moment not to do sth. because you are too frightened; 臨陣脫逃;因害怕而)退縮,放棄;比喻計劃好要做某事,但是到最後一分鍾卻退縮了。

chicken out on sb. – ( Inf.)  to decide not to do sth. for or with sb.. 慫了,因為害怕,決定不為誰做什麽事情, 或者不和別人一起幹什麽

Jason chickened out on us and won't be going with us.

Jason害怕了,不跟我們去了。

 

  • bail on sb./sth. - to leave, abandon sb./sth.(俚語 )拋棄,放棄

She bailed on me after all we had been through together. 我們在一起經曆了所有這些事後, 她竟然拋棄了我。
