VIDEOKINGS -- During an interview at the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk talked about the "billionaire tax." Musk called the US government a sort of corporation, the biggest of its kind. He also said the government has a "monopoly on violence," as well as "no recalls."

During the interview Musk made it clear that even if all CEOs gave the government all of their money, it may not make a difference. Why? Because Musk believes the government wouldn't necessarily know how to spend it wisely, or at least not as wisely as some billionaires are already allocating it themselves.

He shared via Teslarati: “First of all, I pay a lot of tax. My marginal tax rate is like 53%. That’s not trivial. Obviously, there’s asset-based taxes, the sales tax, and everything else. There’s also the estate tax. Generally, I think the estate tax is a good tax." He added that when it comes to a ridiculous level of assets, to the point that there would never be any way to appropriately spend it all, there comes a point that the excess taxing is just simple "capital allocation."

Musk continued: "It does not make sense to take the job of capital allocation away from people who demonstrate great skill in capital allocation, and give it to an entity that has demonstrated very poor skill in capital allocation, which is the government."

Elon Musk says the US has 'very, very ancient leadership,' believes there's 'a serious issue with gerontocracy' in many countries

Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaks before unveiling the Model Y at the company's design studio in Hawthorne, Calif.

Elon Musk says he is a free speech absolutist.

  • Elon Musk told Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner that the US has "very, very ancient leadership."
  • "For a democracy to function, the leaders must be reasonably in touch with the bulk of the population," he said.
  • Musk said he'd like to see political leaders be within 10-20 years of the average population age.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a recent interview said that the United States has a "very, very ancient leadership" and questioned how leading figures can "stay in touch with the people" if they are several generations removed from most of the population.

The comments from the electric vehicle and clean energy company leader came this week during a conversation with Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, at Tesla's factory in Fremont, California.

Musk spoke about everything from Russian President Vladimir Putin to revelations that he sometimes feels "lonely," but he had pointed criticism for leaders whom he feels are disconnected from their citizenry.

When Musk was asked about humans having "a significantly increased lifespan," he offered a straightforward view about human life.

"I don't think we should try to have people live for a really long time," he told Döpfner. "That it would cause asphyxiation of society because the truth is, most people don't change their mind. They just die."

He continued: "So if they don't die, we will be stuck with old ideas and society wouldn't advance."

Musk then said that a "gerontocracy" — where a government is essentially controlled by citizens significantly older than the bulk of the population — is not healthy.

"I think we already have quite a serious issue with gerontocracy, where the leaders of so many countries are extremely old," he revealed. "In the US, it's a very, very ancient leadership. And it is just impossible to stay in touch with the people if you are many generations older than them."

He added: "The founders of the USA put minimum ages for a local office. But they did not put maximum ages because they did not expect that people will be living so long. They should have. Because for a democracy to function, the leaders must be reasonably in touch with the bulk of the population. And if you're too young or too old, you can't say that you will be attached."

Musk said that he'd like to see political leaders "be ideally within 10 or at least, 20 years of the average age of the population."

He said that while he would like to sustain good health over an extended period of time, he doesn't fear death.

"I am not afraid of dying. I think it would come as a relief," he said in the interview.

Over the course of President Joe Biden's tenure, Musk — who seemed pumped about the administration's push to combat climate change early last year — began to criticize Biden, who is 79, over his failure to include Tesla in the national conversation about electric vehicles.

In January, the billionaire on Twitter blasted Biden as "a damp sock puppet in human form."

Last month, the president during a speech called Tesla the country's "largest electric-vehicle manufacturer" after facing repeated criticism for not acknowledging the company as a leader in the automotive industry.

Elon Musk suggests that anyone over the age of 70 should be barred from running for political office

  • Elon Musk suggested that an age limit should be set for running for political office.
  • The Tesla CEO tweeted on Thursday, calling for those over the age of 70 to be barred.
  • His comments follow recent squabbles with Bernie Sanders, during which Musk mocked his age.

Elon Musk recently suggested that anyone over 70 years old should be barred from running for political office.

In a tweet on Thursday, the SpaceX and Tesla founder said: "Let's set an age limit after which you can't run for political office, perhaps a number just below 70."

While no specific lawmaker was mentioned in the tweet, the current president, Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump are both over the age of 70. And Senator Bernie Sanders, who Musk has previously squabbled with, is 80 years old.

Last month, in response to Sanders' tweet demanding that extremely wealthy Americans "pay their fair share," Musk said, "I keep forgetting that you're still alive," Insider's Morgan Keith reported.

Musk also responded with a laughing emoji to another user's joke about Sanders' age and offered to sell more of his Tesla stock.

In March, Musk responded to Sanders' criticism of his huge wealth, saying he would use his money to help humankind. "I am accumulating resources to help make life multiplanetary & extend the light of consciousness to the stars," Musk said on Twitter after Sanders implied that Musk and Jeff Bezos were greedy.

Older presidential candidates have been a point of debate for years. Although the US sets a minimum age of 35 years for people running for president, there is no upper age limit.

Had Sanders been successful in his presidential campaign, he would have been one of the oldest presidents ever on Inauguration Day.

Insider's Grace Panetta reported that the day after Biden formally entered the 2020 Democratic presidential primary field, Trump took a jab at Biden's age and jokingly called himself "a young, vibrant man."

In 2019, 27% of Democratic voters said candidates shouldn't attack their rivals for being too old, Insider's Joseph Zeballos-Roig reported.
