A Porsche Type 962 C Endurance Racing Competition Coupe from 1990-93 fetched a total of €1.5 million ($1.6 million) at the Bonhams Spa Classic Sale, which took place last weekend in Brussels, Belgium.

The successful bidder, however, was not present in the room, but bidding via the internet, and the whopping sale broke the auction house's record for the most valuable lot ever sold online.

The motoring auction achieved a combined total of €5.5 million ($6 million), almost doubling the sum of the previous year.

“We've had an excellent year at Spa, attracting bidders from all across the globe, and far exceeding all previous years' totals," Philip Kantor, Bonhams European Head of Motoring, said in a statement. “The internet continues to grow as a trusted method with which clients can bid, a fact proven today by the most valuable lot ever sold at a Bonhams auction to an online bidder," he added.

The second highest seller of the day was also a Porsche: a 959 Coupé from 1988, which changed hands for €700,000 ($766,066).

Cars from Ferrari were also in high demand: a 365 GTB/4 Daytona 'Berlinetta' from 1970 sold for €667,000 ($729,661), and a 308 GT Berlinetta Vetroresina from 1976 fetched €253,000 ($275,573).

Those who missed out can look forward to Bonhams' Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale, a collectible car auction that will take place in Chichester, UK, on June 26, and which will feature Richard Hamilton's vintage Porsche among other highlights (see Richard Hamilton's Vintage Porsche Hits the Auction Block).
