Your body needs a certain amount of fat each day for normal functions. If you follow 1 2000 calorie diet, you can have 44g to 78 g of fat each day. Your body uses fat to metabolize vitamins A, D, E and K. Fat also helps keep your immune system functioning and maintains the structure of cell membrans.

Some types of fats are healthier than others. Limit or exclude trans and saturated fats, which can increase your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk of heart disease.The American Heart Association recommends consuming monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats to decrease your risk of these chronic conditions. These healthy fats are found in salmon, tuna, nuts, seeds, avocados and vegetable oils. Most of your fat consumption should come from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
