為什麽選擇用英文演講？袁隆平的秘書楊耀鬆表示，會議並沒有要求用英語還是中文演講，“因為這次來的外國院士比較多，翻譯可能把原來的意思變得不準確，尤其是一些專業術語，所以直接用英語溝通更加順暢”。他還說，袁隆平一直都可以用英語演講，“不存在準備的問題”。
