Robert Frost's Nothing Gold Can Stay 讀後感。

聽了, 看了幾個網友的精彩朗誦和翻譯,很喜歡這首短詩。這首詩也讓我想起貝卡版主曾經貼的一首詩 “願你盡享世間美好”。(請看下麵鏈接)

The first time I read Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing gold can stay”, I was at a loss to understand this poem. Its subtlety and depth were beyond my grasp. Then I found several interpretations of this poem on the Internet, which have helped me acquire some degree of understanding. It is such a beautiful poem, which depicts something you already know, yet in a hauntingly beautiful and profound way.

In the poem, the heavenly beauty and perfection represented by gold, flowers, Eden, and dawn are short-lived and transitory, and are soon replaced by green, leaves, grief, and day, which are seemingly less valuable and less desirable, but are an integrated part and a necessary step of natural process and life cycle.

Nothing gold can stay. Yes, beautiful moments are transitory and ephemeral. Woody Allen once said that pleasurable moments are like “transient oases in a vast desert of unspeakable gloom”. Yet these unpleasant and imperfect moments are not less valuable, because they could give rise to a fuller, richer, and larger life.

This poem also reminds me of another poem posted by Rebecca Lin - "I Wish You Enough" by Bob Perks, which also embodies a delicate balance between positive and negative aspects of life, such as sun and rain, happiness and pain, gain and loss, and hello and goodbye. We need all of them, good or bad, in our lives!

Nothing Gold Can Stay

by Robert Frost

Nature's first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leafs a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.
