Fuel Saving Tips - From Firestone Brochure Gas prices are on every driver’s mind these days. But what can you do about it? There are many things that can influence your gas mileage: how you drive and how you maintain your vehicle are two of them. There are simple things that you, as a driver, can do to help increase your gas mileage. Fuel Cost Reduction Tips: ·Buy the right octane of gas. Look in your owner’s manual for the correct octane level for your engine. While less than 5% of the cars require premium fuel, over 20% of all the fuel sold is premium. You’ll save money at the pump if you use the recommended octane. ·Roll the windows up. Aerodynamics are more streamlined, drag is reduced and you’ll get better mileage. ·Only use the air conditioning when you have to. Running the A/C puts an additional load on the engine, resulting in lower fuel economy. ·Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Driving Habits: ·Slow down. According to the Department of Energy, slowing down from 65 mph to 55 mph can increase your mpg by as much as 15 percent. ·Smooth out. Gradually stepping on the gas and gently applying the brakes is more fuel-efficient than sudden stops and gunning the engine. ·Consolidate several trips into one and map out the most efficient way to get to all of your destinations. How Firestone Can Help Improve Your Gas Mileage: ·Oil Changes: A properly lubricated engine is more efficient/economical. Exceeding the manufacturer’s recommended intervals reduces both the life and performance of the engine. That’s why it’s your vehicle’s most frequently needed service. ·Tire Inspections: Uneven tire wear is usually an indicator that something is not correct with your alignment and/or suspension and may reduce your mileage and decrease the life of your tires. Tire inspections are always FREE at Firestone so stop by anytime for a professional tire inspection. ·Fuel and Air Filters: Dirty and clogged filters can decrease the performance of your engine, thus reducing your gas mileage. Have them checked when you have your oil changed. ·Air Conditioning: If your A/C has to work too hard to cool your vehicle, it is costing you gas mileage. Have your A/C checked and recharged, if necessary, to ensure it is operating efficiently. ·Tune-ups: A single fouled plug can cause a loss of power, increased emissions and a decrease in fuel economy. If it has been a while since your last tune up or you are close to a key mileage interval, now is a good time to get a tune up.
