The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data on Wednesday that said children born today can expect to live longer than ever in U.S. history.

Life expectancy at birth jumped to 78.2 years in 2009, which is up from 78 years in 2008.

"What this means is that somebody born in 2009 can expect to live to an average of 78.2 years. This is a new record high for life expectancy," says Kenneth Kochanek, a statistician with the National Center for Health Statistics, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Death rates for 10 of the 15 leading causes of death dropped between 2008 and 2009, including heart disease, cancer and stroke.

"Basically, this is nothing but good news," Kochanek told USA Today.

He said that the reason for the decline will be determined after more data is reviewed.

According to the data, white male life expectancy is now at 75.7 years, while that for a white female is at 80.6.

Black American males now have a life expectancy of 70.9 years, while black American females have jumped up to 77.4 years.

The statistics said that there were 2,436,682 deaths in the U.S. in 2009, which was down from 2,473,018 in 2008.

The death rates declined 3.7 percent for heart disease, 1.1 percent for cancer, 4.1 percent for respiratory disease, 4.2 percent for stroke, and 4.1 percent for accidents.

The CDC said that the infant mortality rate hit a record low of 6.42 deaths per 1,000 live births, which is nearly a 3 percent drop from 2008.
